Lessons Learned for Document Management
• Define customization requirements with end user group
• Don’t customize too much, use strength of software tool
• Pilot and parallel dry run worked well
• Keep filling out metadata simple for the end user
• Present a minimal profile to the general end user
• Create a stable platform that gains trust with the user
• Don’t follow new releases quickly

Lessons Learned with FEED tool
• Implementation requires more effort than thought beforehand
• Split implementation process in achievable intermediate goals
• Dedicated application owners acting as coaches are crucial
• It forces a structured approach upon the early creation process
• It has to compete with quick and dirty, going for the fast result
• The advantages becomes visible in the iteration cycle (revisions)
• Flexibility is essential (cases, no fixed start, naming, drafting)
• Smooth connection to other applications is essential

Standards development
• Fitness for use is determining application of a standard
• Health, Safety & Environmental issues are key drivers in our industry
• Internationalization of standards development is inevitable but slow
• Financial benefit must be clear (business case)
• For software openness and flexibility is key (being able to cope with
and support many different workflows), but be in conformity with
software standards (e.g. platform, connectivity, formats)
