Activity/Assignment • Evolution Quiz • Intro to Ecology Unit: Systems and Bubbles Entry Task • Hand in Evolution Quiz Review Worksheet • DNA and Proteins EOC Review Sheet Due Tuesday

Evolution Quiz

• Double-check your answers, especially on the multiple choice questions.

• Turn your quiz into the Inbox.

• Read, do work from other classes, draw, or do other silent activities until all the quizzes are in.

Ecology

is the study of how abiotic, biotic, and cultural factors in an ecosystem

interact

with each other.

Abiotic

= non-living

Biotic

= living

Cultural

= man-made

Activity/Assignment • Bubble Scenario Entry Task • Get checked off for your DNA and Proteins EOC Review Sheet

Studying Ecosystems

• Why are scientists interested in ecosystems? We want to know: • What defines our environment • What makes a healthy environment • How can humans sustain a healthy environment for the future Many ecosystem studies are looking at how matter and/or energy move from one place to another

Open vs Closed Systems

Open System • Allows energy to go in and out • Allows mass to go in and out • Examples: • Fish tank • Classroom Closed System • Allows energy to go in and out • Does not allow mass to go in and out • Examples: • Mealworm Biochamber

Bubble Scenario

• If you and 3 companions were going to get sent off to live in a completely sealed (but clear) bubble the size of a large building, what would you need to survive for

2 years

? • Draw a picture and diagram on your whiteboard that includes what you need. Use arrows and labels to show how resources are being made or used . • Be prepared to present to the class. Address the following questions: • • What would you need?

How would you know

how much

you need?

• How would you

maintain

your supplies?

Possible problems

• Showers/hygiene?

• How to recycle water?

• Where does trash go? Where to go to the bathroom? What to do with poop?

• Where to get more air/oxygen? What if you start running out?

• Growing food/what kind of food? How much food?

• Your sanity?

• Energy source?

Bubble Scenario

• Draw a diagram on your whiteboard that includes what you need. Use arrows and labels to show how resources are being made or used . • What do you take in and put out?

• How would you know

how much

you need?

• How would you

maintain

your supplies?

But … We don’t live in a bubble!!

Or do we??

Biosphere 2

• What is Biosphere 2? What do you think the purpose of Biosphere 2 was?

• What challenges did they face in Biosphere 2?

• What was the biggest surprise/concern?

• What lessons were learned from the Biosphere 2 project?

• • When the speaker left Biosphere 2, what did she notice?

What do you think is the “message” that the speaker wanted to give the audience?
