This is a reminder that students need to be dressed appropriately for the colder temperatures. Please remind your child(ren) to dress warmly for outside play and gym activities. We listen carefully to weather reports and do check with Environment Canada when making decisions about sending children and staff outside. Math Homework Help For parents and guardians of students in grades 7 through 10, the Ministry of Education has expanded their Math Homework Help to all school boards in Ontario. This is an interactive live online tutoring site through which Ontario certified teachers provide math homework support for students. The tutoring component of the site is available Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Students must create an individual user account by registering online. Each student must register using their Ontario Education Number (OEN). This number can be found on their report cards. The Minister of Education has indicated that the security used in the registration process is similar to that of online banking. Lost and Found Our Lost and Found bins grow daily. Please be aware that we will be spreading out all items for students and families to check during the Parent/Teacher interviews. Items not claimed will be washed and donated to an inner city school. Please feel free to drop into the school to look for lost items at your convenience. Safety Information Drawstrings on jackets, sweatshirts and other clothing items pose a danger to your child. They can become snagged on the school bus handrails or doors, or on the playground equipment. We urge you to inspect all of your children’s clothing and eliminate these hazards whenever possible. The simplest solution is to either remove or cut all drawstrings from the clothing. Do you have any old guitars lying around that are not being used? The JDPS music program could use them! In the past, the JDPS music program has been happy to receive instruments which would otherwise be gathering dust. Mr. Eisenhauer will fix them up and put them to good use! Guitars are of particular need. If you have a potential donation, please contact Mr. Eisenhauer at [email protected]. 24 hour - School Attendance – 271-9910, press 1 Important Dates Nov 5 Picture Re-Take Day Nov 6 Roland Bibeau Concert Nov 6 Babysitting Course Grades 5-8 @ 3:45 - 5:30pm Nov 6 SC - Jars, Jars, Jars & Arts Night 6:00 -8:00 pm Nov 7 Progress Reports go home Nov 11 Remembrance Day & Ceremony Nov 12 Gr 3's (French) Bill Mason Centre Nov 15 PA Day Nov 18-22 Book Fair - Nov 20th 6-8pm Nov 22 Gr 3's (English) Bill Mason Centre Nov 26 Staff Meeting 8 am - Library Dec 4 Holiday Concert 2pm & 6pm Technology Tip Teaching your child how to keyboard the correct way can be difficult. Our School Improvement Plan for Student Achievement (SIPSA) for the last two years has been infusing the Arts in order to promote critical and creative thinking. Results from the Tell It From Me (TTFM) survey completed by students in grades 4 through 8 last Spring indicated that student are impacted by cyber bullying, as well as verbal and physical bullying. In discussions with parents/guardians, staff, and community partners, we are targeting the curriculum focus of Point of View in the Writing component of the Language Curriculum document. We believe this is a critical skill for students to develop as we hope that students will develop their abilities to use their knowledge of form and style in writing to reflect, become more self-aware, develop empathy, and consideration for others, as well as increase their critical thinking skills. We also hope to build student capacity in the area of wellness. Specifically, we hope to enhance a safe, caring and respectful learning and working environment. How can you support your child at home in developing their point of view at home? Watch a T.V program with your child and discuss it from different perspectives. Read a non-fiction story together. Ask your child, whose view point is being presented and how do they know? Ask your child whose view in not being presented? Do not be shy to respond to your child’s question with a question. For example, if your child asks you a question, you can respond by “What do you think?” “What would someone else with a different interest in the issue think about this?” Representing the point of view of an object, a pet, an insect, etc. The most important element is actively listening to your child and having fun! Student Accident Insurance Creating a caring and safe environment for our students is our top priority. Unfortunately, despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents can still happen. Some injuries may result in medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans. As a parent/guardian, you become responsible for these expenses. Student accident insurance is available for purchase, on a voluntary basis, through Reliable Life Insurance Company. Forms can either be picked up from the school office or downloaded at www.binks.ca, or you may apply online at www.insuremykids.com. The OCDSB encourages all parents/guardians to consider purchasing this insurance. If your child is involved in after school related sports activities or is participating in any field trips out of the province you may wish to seriously consider the coverage options, which range from $13.00/year to $31.00/year. This coverage is for the entire calendar year and also applies outside of school hours. If you have any questions, please call Binks Insurance Brokers directly at 613-2261350.
