Determining the Type of Grant
• Start with the goal of the research experience:
Question: What are the goals:
– advance science
– advance your own skills/knowledge
• Depending on the answer:
– Research Study
– Career Development Award
Goal: Advance Science
• Research Studies
– Big research studies (R01)
• Is there pilot data?
• Rigorous methodology
• Clear conclusions to be drawn from data
– Exploratory research studies (R03, R21, R34)
• Doesn’t necessarily require pilot work
• Has strong conceptual framework
• Articulates next steps after initial study
Finding a Research
Mechanism
• How much has already been done to
address your research question?
• Do you have pilot data?
• What is the needed timeframe?
• What are the needed resources?
Money, staffing, access, etc.
Note: Not all mechanisms are available
at all agencies, all the time. There may
be inter-agency differences in rules
for the same mechanism.
R03: Small Grants
• Feasibility or pilot studies
• Develop new techniques or methods
• Facilitate less experienced investigator in
application process
• Established investigator making a
transition to a new area
• 2 years maximum; non-renewable
• $50,000 per year (direct costs)
R21/34:
Exploratory/Developmental
• Test innovative or creative science
• Transition to a new content area
• Initial development of ideas for future
research
• Preliminary studies not as crucial
• 3 years; non-renewable
• Up to $225,000 per year (direct costs)
