Be an ENERGY star! • • Set thermostats at reasonable temperatures for each season and adjust when leaving a room. • Use a clothesline – dryers are energy hogs and sun-dried clothes smell great! • Replace incandescent bulbs with more efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). • Purchase Energy Star® rated appliances, electronics, computers (UofL Green Purchasing Policy). Set computers to “sleep” when idle (under Control Panel > Power Options) • Turn off lights and equipment when you leave the room. • Unplug chargers and equipment when not in use (or switch off power strips). LOUISVILLE.EDU Sustainability at UofL What Can I Do? Reduce SOLID WASTE! Minimize unnecessary consumption: Cut paper use in half by duplexing – printing or copying on both sides. Don’t print e-mails or other documents you won’t really need on paper. Avoid excess packaging. Use reusable filters instead of disposables in furnace, coffeemaker, etc. Switch to rechargeable batteries rather than toxic disposables. Donate unwanted items to UofL Surplus, charities, thrift stores, or non-profit organizations; or have a yard sale! Buy pre-owned items whenever possible or new items with post-consumer recycled content. Find local green products & services: Bring your own bags and buy in bulk. Drink tap water Bring reusable shopping bags. At mealtimes, use reusable items like mugs, cups, utensils, cloth napkins & towels rather than disposables. www.greenlistlouisville.com LOUISVILLE.EDU Sustainability at UofL What Can I Do? Recycle!
