(4:1-8:5)

NIV Revelation 4:1 After this I looked, and there
before me was a door standing open in heaven.
And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like
a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you
what must take place after this." 2 At once I was in
the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in
heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one
who sat there had the appearance of jasper and
carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald,
encircled the throne.

Here these colors are shining so the
appearance is similar to that of the
sun, not dark colors.

John soars through a door to find himself in the
very throne room of Almighty God, Jesus Christ.
The Lord shines in brilliance. A rainbow adorns His
head reminding us that He is faithful to those who
cling to Him. They will not pass away in the raging
torrents of the world.
John now joins the ranks of Moses, Ezekiel, Isaiah,
and Daniel who saw the Lord in His glorious
dwelling place in the world to come. (Read Exodus
24:9-10; Ezekiel 1:4-28; 8:1-3; 10:1-22; Isaiah 6:18; Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; and Revelation 4:1-5:14.)

4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four
other thrones, and seated on them were
twenty-four elders. They were dressed in
white and had crowns of gold on their
heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of
lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder.
Before the throne, seven lamps were
blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.

Before the throne are the angels who serve the
seven churches on earth.
NIV Matthew 18:10 "See that you do not look
down on one of these little ones. For I tell
you that their angels in heaven always see
the face of my Father in heaven.”
Spirits are neuter plural. This is exactly how these spirits
are mentioned elsewhere in Revlation. We have every
reason to believe this is the translation. Some like to
translate this as “sevenfold Spirit” referring to Third
Person of Trinity.

The Twenty-Four Elders represent the
whole people of God in glory.
One view as to why?
– 12 – Tribes of the OT
– 12 – Apostles of the NT
Another view as to why?


The twenty four elders are the totality of
saints. Remember the kingdom of priests
mentioned earlier. In 1 Chronicles 24:7-19;
25 5, 7; there are 24 orders of priesthood
who had charge of temple service. Leviticus
teaches how the priesthood represents
God’s people here on earth.
Jesus has made us to be a kingdom of
priests. The twenty four elders are symbolic
of the whole church, the royal priesthood,
the fulfillment of the 24 orders of priests.

The One seated is also the Lord of
judgment. We are reminded of this
with the storms of judgment for all
who want life outside of His grace and
care.
His people are in His presence by His
grace alone.

6 Also before the throne there was
what looked like a sea of glass, clear
as crystal.

NIV Exodus 24:10 [They] and saw the
God of Israel. Under his feet was
something like a pavement made of
sapphire, clear as the sky itself.

In the center, around the throne, were four living
creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in
front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like
a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a
face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and
was covered with eyes all around, even under his
wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy,
holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and
is, and is to come." 9 Whenever the living creatures
give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the
throne and who lives for ever and ever,

Four arch angels are seen. They oversee all. This
is illustrated with eyes covering their body –
teaching imagery.
The one as a lion oversees the wild creation. The
one as an ox oversees the creation that works
directly with man. The one as an eagle oversees
the heavenly aspects of creation. The one as a
man attends to human welfare and support.
Their anthem reminds us that their service is
gratitude to the gracious Lord who invites them to
share in His labors. God does not need angels do
His bidding. He invites creation to share in the joy
of His unfolding labors before us.

NIV Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah
died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne,
high and exalted, and the train of his robe
filled the temple. 2 Above him were
seraphs, each with six wings: With two
wings they covered their faces, with two
they covered their feet, and with two they
were flying. 3 And they were calling to one
another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD
Almighty; the whole earth is full of his
glory."

10 the twenty-four elders fall down before
him who sits on the throne, and worship
him who lives for ever and ever. They lay
their crowns before the throne and say: 11
"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to
receive glory and honor and power, for you
created all things, and by your will they
were created and have their being."

right hand of him who sat on the

sides and sealed with seven seals.

voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open
the scroll?" 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or
under the earth could open the scroll or even look
inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was
found who was worthy to open the scroll or look
inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not
weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root
of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the
scroll and its seven seals."

NIV Genesis 49:9 You are a lion's cub, O
Judah; you return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a
lioness-- who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,
until he comes to whom it belongs and the
obedience of the nations is his.

NIV Isaiah 11:10 In that day the Root of
Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
the nations will rally to him, and his place of
rest will be glorious.
NIV Isaiah 53:2 He grew up before him like
a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry
ground. He had no beauty or majesty to
attract us to him, nothing in his appearance
that we should desire him.

Chapter 5.
The Lord holds a scroll of what is to come. It is
already complete in His sight. Who can break the
seals so that it can be read? The Lamb is. The
Lamb is the Lord Jesus. He now sees all (shown
with eyes all over). He now possesses
omnipotence (seven means perfect, horns
represent strength – perfect strength). The
Godhead reveals His gracious story through Jesus
Christ. Those who reflect His glory give praise over
this fact.

6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it
had been slain, standing in the center
of the throne, encircled by the four
living creatures and the elders. He had
seven horns and seven eyes, which
are the seven spirits of God sent out
into all the earth. 7 He came and took
the scroll from the right hand of him
who sat on the throne.

8 And when he had taken it, the four living
creatures and the twenty-four elders fell
down before the Lamb. Each one had a
harp and they were holding golden bowls
full of incense, which are the prayers of the
saints. 9 And they sang a new song: "You
are worthy to take the scroll and to open its
seals, because you were slain, and with
your blood you purchased men for God from
every tribe and language and people and
nation.

10 You have made them to be a
kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth." 11
Then I looked and heard the voice of
many angels, numbering thousands
upon thousands, and ten thousand
times ten thousand. They encircled the
throne and the living creatures and the
elders.

12 In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the
Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and
wealth and wisdom and strength and honor
and glory and praise!" 13 Then I heard
every creature in heaven and on earth and
under the earth and on the sea, and all that
is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the
throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor
and glory and power, for ever and ever!" 14
The four living creatures said, "Amen," and
the elders fell down and worshiped.
Under the Earth


NIV Philippians 2:10 that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and
on earth and under the earth.
This probably refers to Jewish / early
Christian burials. The hosts in heaven,
the people living, and the humbled
bodies in the grave will rejoice in the
Lord.

9:1 Be ye deaf therefore, when any
man speaketh to you apart from Jesus
Christ, who was of the race of David,
who was the Son of Mary, who was
truly born and ate and drank, was
truly persecuted under Pontius Pilate,
was truly crucified and died in the
sight of those in heaven and those on
earth and those under the earth;

The cyclical nature of wars and rumors
of wars to the very end is shown. The
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are
a repeating pattern for the world, not
a one time shot.
The First Seal

NIV Revelation 6:1 I watched as the
Lamb opened the first of the seven
seals. Then I heard one of the four
living creatures say in a voice like
thunder, "Come!" 2 I looked, and there
before me was a white horse! Its rider
held a bow, and he was given a crown,
and he rode out as a conqueror bent
on conquest.
THE FIRST SEAL IS BROKEN.


A white horse represents human pride
bent on others becoming submissive.
The battle bow with a horse shows he
quick to take power to make an
earthly reputation for himself.
He represents all who want earthly
power for the sake of vanity.
The Second Seal

3 When the Lamb opened the
second seal, I heard the second
living creature say, "Come!" 4
Then another horse came out, a
fiery red one. Its rider was given
power to take peace from the
earth and to make men slay each
other. To him was given a large
sword.
THE SECOND SEAL IS
BROKEN.

Vain leadership leads to the rider of
the red horse who represents
consequent war and strife among the
peoples of the earth.
The Third Seal

5 When the Lamb opened the third
seal, I heard the third living creature
say, "Come!" I looked, and there
before me was a black horse! Its rider
was holding a pair of scales in his
hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded
like a voice among the four living
creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat
for a day's wages, and three quarts of
barley for a day's wages, and do not
damage the oil and the wine!"
THE THIRD SEAL IS
BROKEN.

War and strife leads to the rider of the
black horse who represents
consequent famine and poverty.
The Fourth Seal

7 When the Lamb opened the fourth
seal, I heard the voice of the fourth
living creature say, "Come!"8 I looked,
and there before me was a pale horse!
Its rider was named Death, and Hades
was following close behind him. They
were given power over a fourth of the
earth to kill by sword, famine and
plague, and by the wild beasts of the
earth.
THE FOURTH SEAL IS
BROKEN.


Death is the great equalizer of all men.
At least a quarter of the world’s
population is affected by this cycle of
war at any given time.
The end is still to come. As Christ
says, “Do not be alarmed by wars and
rumors of wars, the end is yet to
come.” Matthew 24:6.
The Fifth Seal

9 When he opened the fifth seal, I
saw under the altar the souls of those
who had been slain because of the
word of God and the testimony they
had maintained. 10 They called out in
a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign
Lord, holy and true, until you judge
the inhabitants of the earth and
avenge our blood?"

11 Then each of them was given a
white robe, and they were told to wait
a little longer, until the number of their
fellow servants and brothers who were
to be killed as they had been was
completed.
The Saints under the Altar


True Christians and the peoples are
the earth stand in contrast to one
another.
The saints have a lasting name for
themselves because of Christ’s
sacrifice, not vanity.
The Fifth Seal


Holy Suffering.
This is suffering and hardship for the
sake of being a Christian – the
Tribulation. This is not suffering for
merely being present in a war torn
world.

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal.
There was a great earthquake. The sun
turned black like sackcloth made of goat
hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13
and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late
figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a
strong wind. 14 The sky receded like a
scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and
island was removed from its place.

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes,
the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every
slave and every free man hid in caves and
among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They
called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall
on us and hide us from the face of him who
sits on the throne and from the wrath of the
Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath
has come, and who can stand?"

NIV Isaiah 2:10 Go into the rocks, hide
in the ground from dread of the LORD
and the splendor of his majesty! 11
The eyes of the arrogant man will be
humbled and the pride of men brought
low; the LORD alone will be exalted in
that day.
THE SIXTH SEAL IS BROKEN.

The creation passes away. Those who
strove for standing on this earth are in
despair. They want to be hidden from
the Lord’s glory and presence.
Revelation, chapter 7.
At the time of the glorious appearing
of our Lord, all mankind will see Him.
The angels will ensure all mankind will
see Him and the passing of this
creation. The angels ensure that the
saints appear before the Lamb in
white robed glory.

The angels go forth to gather God’s
elect from the four corners. 144,000
is a symbolic number. Notice the 24
elders and 144,000 are the same – the
totality of saints.

One of the saints asks John who the
white robed saints are. John says the
answer is obvious. It is. They are the
ones who sought to be cleansed by
the blood of the Lamb, the Lord Jesus.


NIV Revelation 7:1 After this I saw four
angels standing at the four corners of the
earth, holding back the four winds of the
earth to prevent any wind from blowing on
the land or on the sea or on any tree. 2
Then I saw another angel coming up from
the east, having the seal of the living God.
He called out in a loud voice to the four
angels who had been given power to harm
the land and the sea:

3 "Do not harm the land or the sea or
the trees until we put a seal on the
foreheads of the servants of our God."
A seal on the Forehead

God’s glory rests upon His children and
is easily seen by all – like writing or a
seal on the forehead.
The Sixth Seal –
The Perfect Totality of
Saints


4 Then I heard the number of those who were
sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel. 5 From
the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed, from the
tribe of Reuben 12,000, from the tribe of Gad
12,000, 6 from the tribe of Asher 12,000, from the
tribe of Naphtali 12,000, from the tribe of Manasseh
12,000, 7 from the tribe of Simeon 12,000, from
the tribe of Levi 12,000, from the tribe of Issachar
12,000, 8 from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000, from
the tribe of Joseph 12,000, from the tribe of
Benjamin 12,000.

The perfect totality of
saints

NIV Revelation 6:11 Then each of
them was given a white robe, and
they were told to wait a little longer,
until the number of their fellow
servants and brothers who were to be


9 After this I looked and there before
me was a great multitude that no one
could count, from every nation, tribe,
people and language, standing before
the throne and in front of the Lamb.
They were wearing white robes and
were holding palm branches in their
hands.

29 On the walls all around the temple,
in both the inner and outer rooms, he
carved cherubim, palm trees and open
flowers.

32 And on the two olive wood doors he
carved cherubim, palm trees and open
flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm
trees with beaten gold.
35 He carved cherubim, palm trees and
open flowers on them and overlaid them
with gold hammered evenly over the
carvings. 36 And he built the inner
courtyard of three courses of dressed stone
and one course of trimmed cedar beams.
The Sixth Seal

10 And they cried out in a loud voice:
"Salvation belongs to our God, who
sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."
11 All the angels were standing
around the throne and around the
elders and the four living creatures.
They fell down on their faces before
the throne and worshiped God,

15 Therefore, "they are before the throne of
God and serve him day and night in his
temple; and he who sits on the throne will
spread his tent over them. 16 Never again
will they hunger; never again will they
thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor
any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the
center of the throne will be their shepherd;
he will lead them to springs of living water.
And God will wipe away every tear from
their eyes."
The Sixth Seal



Notice the relief from sun and being
led to water.
The wilderness wandering is over.
The promised land is at hand.
The Seventh Seal

NIV Revelation 8:1 When he opened the
seventh seal, there was silence in heaven
for about half an hour. 2 And I saw the
seven angels who stand before God, and to
them were given seven trumpets. 3 Another
angel, who had a golden censer, came and
stood at the altar. He was given much
incense to offer, with the prayers of all the
saints, on the golden altar before the
throne.
The Seventh Seal

4 The smoke of the incense, together
with the prayers of the saints, went up
before God from the angel's hand. 5
Then the angel took the censer, filled
it with fire from the altar, and hurled it
on the earth; and there came peals of
thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning
and an earthquake.
Jericho imagery
The saints’ prayers for deliverance from
their enemies now finds fulfillment.
THE SEVENTH SEAL IS BROKEN

The final judgment. The enemies of
the faith are now judged and done
away with.
