Do Not Go Gentle Into the Goodnight

            Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.

       Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light. 4/27/2020

Analysis

“ Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night ”

 Thomas' father, an army veteran, grew weak and frail with old age. Thomas describes this experience in the poem. The author tries to convince his father to fight against imminent death, speaking to his father by using wise men, good men, wild men, and grave men as examples to show that no matter how they have lived their lives, they should fight death. The poem implies that one should not die without fighting for one's life.

Analysis

“ A Process in the Weather of the Heart ”

  Part 5 (A Process in the Weather of the Heart) In this poem, the author appears to be experiencing a struggle between life and death, as supported by the line “ Drives in a death as life leaks out.

” The poem shows that Thomas chose life over death. This poem could also be interpreted as a grief process, as if Thomas has lost someone whom he cared for deeply and expressed his feelings through poetry. The final line of the poem is "and the heart gives up its dead." It supports the view of a grief process because in the end, Thomas has finally let go of the person he lost, the final phase of grief.

Significance

 The poem, “ Do Not go Gentle Into that Goodnight, ” drew our attention due to its meaning and understanding of our own life. The poem explains why you should strive until the moment the dying light fades, so that you will feel achievement and satisfaction for struggling to live your life. It is important to understanding poetry because it shows a deeper meaning to the words that you once saw as just words themselves. It shows the significance of something with unique value, and once you have come to understand poetry, you will be able to have a greater awareness and understanding of the world.
