Compression
• Lossless
• 25% or smaller of the original size
• Some datasets can be compressed to 15% or smaller of
their original size
• Lossy
• Performs lossless compression first
• File is then decimated to meet target file size
• Greater compression results in fewer points in output file
• Point that remain are geospatially accurate

Overview
• MrSID Generation 4 (*.SID)
• Now there are two “flavors” of MrSID
• Raster (from images such as TIFF files)
• LiDAR (from LiDAR data such as LAS files)
• Will it be a 2D Image?
• It remains as 3D LiDAR data.
• The full point cloud is accessible.
• Will all of the point data be included in the compressed
file?
• Yes! Uses standard LAS fields

• Yes! The new compressed MrSID LiDAR files allow programs
to access the full point cloud data as the original file. The only
difference is that it is faster and takes up less disk space.

website and comes installed with LiDAR Compressor.
• Provides functionality to go from MrSID to ASCII or LAS.
