Kensington and Chelsea DAAT
History ETE
Service users in Kensington and Chelsea have always benefited from
the ‘informal’ education, training and volunteering opportunities we
have offered at Blenheim CDP.
In April 2007 Kensington and Chelsea DAAT recognised this by funding
the development of a structured ETE programme for the borough.
Now in its 3rd year and still proving to be a great success.
More recently the profile of ETE has been raised by it’s prominence as
a key policy in the 10 year drug strategy and focusing on Recovery
and Reintegration which is high on the government agenda.

Overall Aim of ETE
 Our
initial aim was to write an ETE
Strategy, ETE Directory and conduct a
Training Needs Analysis of service
users’ ETE needs in Kensington and
Chelsea, with the view to develop an ETE
Programme for drug/alcohol users/ex
users in Kensington & Chelsea.
Objectives:
 To
network with drug & alcohol agencies in
the borough for referrals
 To work in close partnership with SUDRG
 To assess, advise and guide service users
 To map service users into ETE
opportunities
 To provide relevant accredited, non
accredited training and support packages
 To monitor development and progress

The Referral Process
We network and liaise with drug & alcohol agencies in the borough
of Kensington & Chelsea, along with ETE satellite services at
various agencies. This enables the ETE Coordinator to regularly
communicate with care managers/key workers, thus raising the
profile of ETE.
We receive our referrals from:
Substance Use Team, DIP, Dual Diagnosis Team, local drug and
alcohol services, young peoples services and local GP’s. we also
provide local satellite services at DIP and for young people services,
off site.

We have lots of client success stories……..
but here are a couple!!!

When Paul was referred to us
his self esteem was very low
and he had a very negative
view of his future.
After lots of support and
encouragement he has
recently completed all 5
courses required by London
Underground.
We were also successful in
finding him a sponsor which
enabled him to complete
these courses.
He is now qualified to start
applying for paid work on
London Underground.

Deborah who suffers with
anxiety, finds it hard to meet
people and go out anywhere
on her own. She wants to be a
dress maker and have her own
stall on Portobello Rd. By
helping her to believe in
herself, she has just applied for
a Market Trading workshop
and will be starting a dress
making course thereafter.

Kelly, again has very low self
esteem and anxiety about
working in groups, after much
help and support she has
completed personal
development workshops and is
now completing an NVQ in
Drama and Performing Arts.

Future for our clients?

ETE high on government agenda focusing on Recovery
and Reintegration
 Welfare to Work – currently in House of Lords. At present
it is optional for people to declare they use heroin or
crack
 Change to benefits; clients being moved onto JSA and
ESA. October 2010, new Treatment Allowance comes
in
 New ISA safeguarding scheme; how will this impact
clients?
 LDAN Employment Expert Group – 2 year pilot
 Recession….2.5 million out of work!!!!
The focus will be on getting
people skilled up and
reintegrated back into the
community.
ETE is not just about getting a
job, for some this is not a
reality.
Our message…..
We Believe in ….. YOU!
ETE is a vital and essential part of the treatment journey for
people trying to integrate back into the community.
Often the people we work with have no sense of direction, lack
confidence and self esteem. This is our main challenge. Most of them are far
from job ready.
We ‘believe’ people can change and help them to start to ‘believe’ in
themselves. Supporting them to reach their full potential in life, in a friendly
and supportive environment. By setting small, achievable, realistic goals we
can empower to realise their future, step by step.
Summary
Our clients need access to regular, intensive,
encouragement and guidance regarding ETE….
with people who have knowledge and experience of working with
addiction.
When they come to us, their journey has only just begun.
Many of them have no qualifications, some have never worked
and need a high level of support right through into paid
employment. This can be the most tricky time for some.
We try to prepare them, to cope with the pressures and
complexities that volunteering, training / courses and the
workplace can present to them.
The success and popularity of the ETE
Programme in Kensington and Chelsea, has
clearly highlighted the need and the effectiveness
of ETE provision for drug and alcohol service
users.
Other DAAT’s in London are now showing an
interest as to how to replicate our ETE programme
in their borough.
