Educational System
in
France
General:
• Compulsory education for everyone from 6
to 16 years
• All-day-school free of charges.
• Extras: lunch in cafeterias and supervisory
staff for exercises.
• Standardized curriculum.
Preschool:
• Pre - school education for 2 - 5 year olds.
• Nearly all 3-5 year - olds attend pre school.
• Preschool is a structural, administrative
and educational part of the school system.
Primary school
• From 6 to 11 you attend primary school.
• Classification in two different levels:
- First level to learn basic skills
- at the end of the second level: test for
information reasons.
Secondary school 1
• College for all 11 to 15 – year - olds.
• Same curriculum for everyone.
• Integration classes for pupils who want to
get a professional education.
• Three possibilities for certificate :
- Collège
- Technical
- Vocational
Secondary school 2
Different options after school:
After a school of general
and technological

• Baccalaureate general
(qualification to attend
college)
• Baccalaureate technical
(preparation to working
life)
After a vocational school
(this school prepares you
for a job):
• Leaving certificate (BEP)
• Skilled work-Diploma
• Craft certificate (CAP)
• An apprenticeship that
takes 1-3 years. After that
you are allowed to work
in a job.
Tertiary education
The final exam is standardized and is supervised
by university.
After passing the final exam, different
ways of education:
• Grand écoles: Private Colleges specialized in
e.g. economy, engineering, education
• University
• Brevet de technicien supérieur: technical college

Primary Education
• Voluntary kindergarden for everyone from
3 to 6 years, last year obligatory for all
children
• Half a day- kindergarden and full-timekindergarden (free of charge for half a day,
for every child)
• Preschool for 5 - year - olds (voluntary)

• General compulsory education for 6 to10year – olds
• Special branches for languages, music,
sport,…
Secondary School 1
Two focusses after primary school:
• Hauptschule: 4 years, general education

• Grammar school: 4 years, expanded
education with either wider range of
languages or more sciences

voluntary tests and enter the third period
automatically.
The tests in this third period are obligatory.
• Passing this exam is the condition to enter
secondary school 2 If you don‘t pass the exam,
you can finish school after the tenth year.
