for cataloging, NOT the box
The container’s primary reason for being is its
PR content. You may use the container as a
secondary source.
Compile the most complete information about
the item using all available sources.

4. Thou Shalt Craft Informative
Yet Succinct Summaries
Remember the container or box’s prime
function is PR, so use wisely
Let your users know what the item is about–
especially for accompanying media
Pay special attention to the introduction and
conclusion of the item– often the summary info
is already outlined for you
When in doubt, check out the publisher’s Web
site or movie review sites (Internet Movie
Database, Rotten Tomatoes)

Inform your user upfront of loan rules
and fees for rental collections

Quality for Quantity
It is a fact that video materials take longer to
catalog than the average book
Batch like subjects, series, publishers to assist
in streamlining cataloging = productivity
Set aside quality DVD cataloging time> don’t
mix apples and oranges
Use institutional or community resources when
appropriate > seek foreign language expertise

AGONIZE!
Trust your judgment and use your talents
Limit “time outs” for the problem “children”
Don’t create false expectations waiting until
you have more time > that day may never come
Use your network of support and resources
