MARC Review



Tags are the 3-digit MARC codes found in the
variable field of the bibliographic record
Indicators supply information about the field,
primarily for indexing, card production & system
functions. Numbers in the indicator positions have
assigned meanings, and in some fields, a blank
space is meaningful
Subfields are the smallest logical unit of
information in a variable field and contain the
textual information for bibliographic description.
They are proceeded by delimeters (| “pipe” OR
& “ampersand”)

What’s so different about DVDs?


Cataloging DVDs generally NO different than
cataloging other films or videos
DVDs may have special features:
• additional language tracks; subtitles
• dual-sided (widescreen and standard)
• closed-captioning
• interactive menu
• interviews with cast and crew
• music video featuring movie song
• multi-disc “making of” or games

Standard info such as interactive menu, scene
access, “formatted to fit TV”, region 1 DVD
player, NTSC, and other “duhs” need not be
noted in the cataloging record
