Rio + 20
The history
• In 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in
Stockholm
• In 1980, the International Union for the Conservation of Natural Resources
(IUCN) published the World Conservation Strategy
• In June 1992, the first UN Conference on Environment and Development
was held in Rio de Janeiro and adopted Agenda 21: A Programme of Action
for Sustainable Development contains the Rio Declaration on Environment
and Development, which recognizes each nation’s right to pursue social and
economic progress and assigned to States the responsibility of adopting a
model of sustainable development
• In 2002, ten years after the Rio Declaration, a follow-up conference, the
World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was convened in
Johannesburg to renew the global commitment to sustainable development.

The Nordic Swan
Requirements
• Products carrying the Nordic Ecolabel meet extremely
high environmental and often climate requirements.
• A life-cycle perspective of the product is analysed,
i.e., the product's impact on the environment from raw
material/source to waste.
• Criteria is also set with regard to:
– Quality
– health aspects, and
– performance/functionality.
• Each product group has overriding general criteria
requirements as well as product-specific requirements.

CO2 Calculators
Misa – Carbon Footprint calculator
Carbon Footprint for Municipalities/Cities
•
•
MiSA has calculated the carbon footprint for all Norwegian municipalities
using its klimakost model.
Misa can deliver much more detailed data on request and adapt the model
for other countries. CO2 Focus
Carbon footprint for businesses
Misa offer klimakost for businesses as well. Klimakost is a tool for
calculating the carbon footprint of businesses and organizations. When a
business undertakes a klimakost analysis, the results will be benchmarked
against the average for your industry or sector.
•
Misa offer klimakost analyses on several different levels. If the company is
relatively small, Misa recommend a simpler analysis, while larger
companies may benefit more from a full analysis that pinpoints emissions
from various departments and activities.

Environmental Reporting Systems
• Global Reporting Initiative
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is most prevalent standards for
sustainability reporting — also known as ecological footprint. GRI seeks to
make sustainability reporting by all organizations as routine, and comparable
to financial reporting.
A sustainability report is an organizational report that gives information about
•Economic
•Environmental
•Social, and
•Governance performance.
More than 3,000 organizations from 60 countries use the Guidelines to
produce their sustainability reports. GRI Guidelines apply to corporate
businesses, public agencies and smaller enterprises, NGOs, industry groups
and others.

Environmental Standards,
Protocols and Legislation
Most companies are preparing to face three major new
eco-laws:
• REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Assessment of
Chemical Hazards)
• RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances); and
• WEEE (the directive on Waste Electronic and Electric
Equipment).

Cities of the Future (Norway)
Cities of the Future is a collaboration between the Government and the 13
largest cities in Norway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make
the cities better places to live.
Co-operation with:
• the business sector making green products commonplace
• the Government avoiding building workplaces where there is no tram
or bus
• the inhabitants, building cities where people want to live. Cities of the
Future will make sure this cooperation takes place.
The Cities of the Future programme will help cities and municipalities to
share their climate friendly city development ideas with each other and
with the business sector, the regions and the Government
