Environmental management
ISO 14001 and BS855 is for environmental
management. This means what the organizations
Do to:
• minimize harmful effects on the environment
caused by its activities,
• to conform to applicable regulatory
requirements, and to
• achieve continual improvement of its
environmental performance.
Generic standards (more on ISO)
Lillehammer miljø
Environment Lillehammer
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are generic
standards. Generic means that the same
standards can be applied:
• to any organization, large or small,
whatever its product or service,
• in any sector of activity, and
• whether it is a business enterprise, a
public administration, or a government
department.
Processes, not products
Lillehammer miljø
Environment Lillehammer
(more on ISO)
Both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 concern the
way an organization goes about its work.
• They are not product standards.
• They are not service standards.
• They are process standards.
• They can be used by both product
manufacturers and service providers.

The Nordic Swan
Nordic Ecolabel
is the official Ecolabel of the Nordic countries and was established in 1989 by the
Nordic Council of Ministers. The purpose of the Ecolabel is to contribute to
sustainable consumption and production, and our vision is a sustainable society.

The EU-Ecolabel
The EU-Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme, which means that
producers, importers and retailers can choose to apply for the label for
their products.
The life cycle of a product begins with:
• extraction – the mining or cultivation of the raw materials, such as cotton
(for textiles) or wood (for paper products), it continues with
• manufacturing and packaging
• distribution
• Use, and finally
• “end of life” stage, when the product is disposed of or recycled.
When developing EU Ecolabel criteria for products, the focus is on the stages
where the product has the highest environmental impact, and this differs
from product to product.

The Blue Angel
The Blue Angel is the first and most well-known
eco-label worldwide.
• Since 1978 it has set the standard for eco-friendly
products and services selected by an independent jury in
line with defined criteria.
• The Blue Angel is awarded to companies as kind of a
reward for their commitment to environmental protection.
• Companies use it to professionally promote their ecofriendly products in the market.
• The Blue Angel is an ecological beacon showing the
consumer the way to the ecologically superior product
and promotes environmentally conscious consumption.

Environmental Reporting Systems
• Global Reporting Initiative
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is most prevalent standards for
sustainability reporting — also known as ecological footprint. GRI seeks to
make sustainability reporting by all organizations as routine, and comparable
to financial reporting.
A sustainability report is an organizational report that gives information about
•Economic
•Environmental
•Social, and
•Governance performance.
More than 3,000 organizations from 60 countries use the Guidelines to
produce their sustainability reports. GRI Guidelines apply to corporate
businesses, public agencies and smaller enterprises, NGOs, industry groups
and others.
