In turn, the chapter will become directly accountable to the board of trustees. As a result of the partnerships ATO has created with colleges and universities, local communities and businesses, and parents of members, it will be natural to expect these boards to be made up of alumni, professors, business people, community leaders, and parents. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 13 Board of Trustees • Responsibilities – Authority to make decisions for chapter programs and future health – Accountable for chapter performance – Evaluate scholastic status and progress with critical skills 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 14 Board of Trustees • Authority – All powers of National Board of Directors as those relate to management, operation, governance of the chapter and individual members 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 15 Board of Trustees • Duties – 1+ Meeting per month – Assist the NHQ CEO in the discharge of his duties – Attend chapter meetings & ceremonies frequently – Council and advise the officers and members of the chapter 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 16 Board of Trustees • Duties (Cont.) – Protect the interests of the Fraternity on campus in its relations with the university and other campus/Greek organizations – Exercise all powers of the National Board of Directors with respect to disciplinary procedures and the chapter 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 17 Board of Trustees • Duties (Cont.) – Know the “Bylaws and Policies & Procedures” of the National Fraternity – Interface appropriately with other chapter alumni entities – Recruit additional volunteers after you tenure is complete 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 18 Board of Trustees • Possible Members – Alumni – Parents – University employees (Profs) – Members of the surrounding community – Undergraduate actives 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 19 Board of Trustees • Offices – Ritual Advisor – Parents Club – Alumni Relations Advisor – – – – Chairman Vice Chairman Academic Advisor Career Placement Advisor – Fund Raising Chairman – Financial Advisor 7/17/2015 * Minimum of 3 people should be elected to the BOT. 1 Person can hold more than 1 position. Alpha Tau Omega 20 Board of Trustees • Pros – Complete chapter involvement – Power to carry out objectives – Direct contact to NHQ – Offloads duties of chapter officers 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 21 Board of Trustees • Cons – High level of time commitment – Held accountable for chapter failure – Takes away a large amount of control from the chapter 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 22 Lunch 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 23 Lost Alumni 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 24 NHQ Plan • Matt Arnold’s Summary – Resolve the debt. Identify those who owe and go directly after them. – Find alumni support. First through personal contacts, and then through formal contact via the NHQ. – Send staff to be on campus to for a 4-6 weeks to recruit 20-30 member group to be considered a colony. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 25 NHQ Plan – Colony will work closely with the National Fraternity staff and local board of trustees (alumni advisory board) for 9-12 months to meet the requirements of chartering. Most importantly, reaching the 45 member level. NHQ Staff will visit on a monthly basis. – Recharter. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 26 NHQ Plan • Success Stories – University of Texas. Closed due to hazing in 1988. Rechartered in 1992. Won true merit in 1994, 1995 and 1996 with several honorable mentions in other years. Had never won true merit previously in its 100+ year history. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 27 NHQ Plan • Success Stories ( con’t ) – Baylor University. Recharted in 2005. Won 14 awards at 2006 ATO National Congress including True Merit, Thomas Arkle Clark(Top ATO Undergrad) and runner-up for top chapter award. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 28 NHQ Plan • Success Stories ( con’t ) – University of Maryland. Rechartered in 1999. – True Merit in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Never won True Merit prior to rechartering. – 2005 National IFC Award of Distinction. ( All fraternities / all chapters ) – Top chapter award in 2006. – 80+ members. – $125,000.00 operating budget. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 29 NHQ Plan • Success Stories (con’t) – Texas Tech University. Suffered a fate very similar to Theta Sigma. Chapter membership shrunk to the point of non-existance. Recolonized in 2006. Has already reached it 45 member goal. Has shown a very strong presence in the Texas Tech Greek system. Has established its BOT and has begun a search for a new house. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 30 NHQ Plan • Member Identification – The recruitment staff will be VERY choosy in who they select to be a part of Theta Sigma. – ATO is the Leadership Fraternity. Expect the recruitment process to focus on campus leaders. – Student government. – Student athletes. – Those who hold office in other campus organizations. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 31 NHQ Plan • Member Identification( con’t ) – Contact University to identify potential candidates. – Contact Sororities for potential candidates. – Candidates MUST have a high GPA. – Candidates MUST be able to prove financial solvency. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 32 NHQ Plan • Member Identification( con’t ) – Candidates MUST show true leadership potential. – Involvement in off-campus activities such as church and community service. – Other organizations that the candidate is or was a member of such as National Honor Society, Boy Scouts of America, etc. 7/17/2015 Alpha Tau Omega 33 NHQ Plan • The Result – – – – – – – 7/17/2015 Top Notch Individuals.
