Flow-down of Strategic Priorities to Annual and 5-year WMKO Plan

Taft Armandroff Hilton Lewis September 18, 2009

Outline

• Status of Previous Strategic Planning Goals • New Goals from Draft Scientific Strategic Plan and Their Status 2

Status of Previous Strategic Planning Goals

3

5-Year Goals & Status

• Development of a plan, and its initial implementation, for closed-loop control of the image quality delivered by the telescope to the instruments. The goal is to be limited only by the natural seeing at any time for non AO instruments.

• Implement procedures for evaluating and monitoring image quality, and instrument throughput.

MAGIQ autofocus on LRIS & NIRSPEC being

implemented

Extend to other instruments (e.g., MOSFIRE, &

HIRES)

4

5-Year Goals & Status

• Integration of laser beacon for routine AO correction – Done! • Improvements to AO interface and performance – Done! • Implement atmospheric dispersion compensation for LRIS – Done! • Upgrade CCD for LRIS-R – Done! • Development of an interface and ICD for visitor instruments that can be brought to Keck to take advantage of unique science opportunities – Draft available 5

5-Year Goals & Status

• Near IR wide-field imaging/multi-object spectroscopic capabilities (MOSFIRE) – Underway; to be completed in mid 2010! • Improved guiders/acquisition systems – MAGIQ installed on NIRSPEC & LRIS;

MOSFIRE MAGIQ underway; plan to continue

• Instrumentation to further exploit AO capability – OSIRIS, NIRSPAO • Definition and initial development of next generation Keck AO system (KPAO, other?) – NGAO System Design completed; preliminary

design is underway

6

5-Year Goals & Status

• Near-IR detector upgrades (NIRC2/NIRSPEC) – No progress; see white paper by McLean & Graham • Overcoated silvering of K2 primary, secondary and tertiary – No progress • Adoption and development of a new detector electronics design that will be standardized and capable of serving our needs (at both optical and IR wavelengths) for the next decade.

MOSFIRE design using ASIC could be applied to IR

detector upgrades and future IR instruments; no progress to date on existing instruments

7

10-Year Goals & Status

• AO development: Commissioning of next generation AO system, extension to visible wavelengths, K1 laser beacon – K I LGS underway; NGAO design efforts underway • Development of hybrid Ag-Al durable coatings for K1 and K2 – No progress • Development of a comprehensive Keck Observatory data archive. Initial experiments, funded by NASA, with archiving HIRES data commenced in 2004 – KOA • Next generation instrumentation (including those related to the Keck Interferometer) – SSC & WMKO called for white papers for next-

generation instrumentation; funded Keck Cosmic Web Imager study & LRIS high dispersion study in FY09

Overall Assessment

• Strong achievements / progress relative to agreed strategic plan goals • Proper time to define new strategic goals 9

New Goals from Draft Scientific Strategic Plan and Their Status

10

Budget Process at WMKO

• Annual Fiscal Year Plan – Approved at June SSC & Board meeting • 5-Year Plan – Approved at February SSC & Board meeting • Extensive consultation with SSC & Board as Observatory prepares both plans • Plan / budget requires Board approval and SSC recommendation 11

Big Picture

• Many useful initiatives identified in Scientific Strategic Plan • Limited by resources available • Path forward – Maximize available resources from federal and private grants – Make wise choices among initiatives as a Keck Observatory community 16
