Each has a separate business meeting to discuss. Other Historical Events the ADA & AGD 1978-80 The ADA approves the first Sponsor Approval Program (SAP); first sponsors are approved in 1980. 1981-83 SAP discontinued following expressed concerns by a “variety of interest groups” (CCCDE & ECDCE being 2 of them). The AGD – 1984-89 AGD picks up SAP to “enhance its membership” with ADA’s blessings . CCCDE & ECDCE express concerns about the appropriateness of the AGD “approving” dental school CE programs and urged that the ADA explore a continuing dental education quality assurance program modeled after the ACCME. The ADA – mid-late 80’s ADA continues to discuss what its role in CE should be – “to monitor and disseminate information on CDE and encourage the provision of and participation in CDE.” The ADA – 1989-93 Due to efforts of the AADS/SCE, CCCDE & ECDCE, “the Council on Dental Education undertook efforts leading to a proposed national provider recognition program.” ADA invites AADS to send a representative to the 1989 Task Force on CDE (J. Sharp) The ADA – 1991-92 The ADA models its developing sponsor approval program after ACCME – it includes standards & guidelines. The initial program lacks a standard on Conflict of Interest. CCCDE/ECDCE urges for inclusion of a Conflict of Interest Standard; one is ultimately approved. We provide language and examples. The ADA - 1993 First group of providers approved in 1993. 1994-Present The ADA CERP lacks a site visit component. John Knapp and Cathy Sandeen develop the ACCDE to include site visits – participation is voluntary by ACDE members. Many programs go through the review process. Dr. Tom Chandler is the Ex. Director. The ACCDE eventually becomes PRAC. Activities of PRAC have been quietly ongoing. Through the years, the AGD has quietly continued its recognition program. They accept all programs that have ADA CERP approval. Many schools never sought AGD “approval.” • • • • • • • Many Thanks to: Sharon Grayden – selected photos Marie Baudek – dates & content Lynda Kreischer – dates Sue Corbett – partial archives Randy Newquist – sent the box Scott Krenz – technical support All the wonderful members of CCCDE, ECDCE & ACDE through the years. Happy Trails When you get too tired to administer C E, you give a program on the history of CDE organizations then hit the QLB on the way down the trail……….
