Backround
Purpose of this document is to describe the differencies and similarities
between some of the Eaton producst and Smart UPS VT, which is one of
the main competitive products in IT channel.
This document covers points from technical and commercial point of view
from public sources.
We will have new product launches in 2015 for similar kW rating UPS’s
thus this is a sneak peak on how we will be superrior compared to one of
our main competitors.

Smart UPS VT Module
•
Reduced service requirements
through module-level service. The
entire power module can be replaced
by a service engineer and the UPS
can be up and running in
approximately 30 minutes. This keeps
MTTR at a minimum.

Battery configuration
Smart UPS VT
•
The user can quickly react to a need for a battery replacement,
even without having to put the system in bypass, MTTR decreases
and will consequently decrease the risk of business disruptions.
This results in higher availability.
•
It seems that particular battery string needs to be isolated from the
rest of the system as in 9355 and Koala platforms. It is clear that
the handle and connection is easier for VT but due to the structure
also more expensive as in Koala batteries can be changed while
UPS is feeding the load.

Serviceability remarks Smart UPS VT
•
Power module and the whole UPS is very old design, using ”traditional” components and
layout.  State of the art in the 90’s.
•
Module in general is very heavy and cannot be operated by single person thus making it
difficult to service the unit in challenging environments.
•
It is very unlikely that module or parts that generally fail (power components) can be
fixed/changed on site, meaning that the whole module needs to be replaced every time it
fails. This is very costly UK price end user price (40kVA) is around 6000 pounds / 7000€ /
9100 USD.
•
Capacitors are fixed in the design, which raises the question, does the module need to be
changed when capacitors die, eg. Within 5 years.
•
Battery desing is very similar to Eaton legacy products, but much more expensive. Only
benefit is having the handle and quick connector. Question here is that does the user really
want to change the batteries or should this be done by trained personnel.
•
Battery string is around 4x800=3200 pounds  3700€ / 4900 USD

VT Minimum clearance is 100 mm Recommended: 600 mm
•

Software and connectivity
•
Built-in Web/SNMP Management (A)
•
The integrated WEB/SNMP Management Card with Environmental Monitor
allows the customer to manage the UPS via the Web, SNMP as well as
Telnet. On Smart-UPS VT the web card is included with the UPS as
standard.
•
An additional benefit of Smart-UPS VT is that the VT integrates
into InfraStruXure Manager, the most comprehensive
centralized management for the entire NCPI.
