What Constitutes the Need for a Related Service

Speech is the ONLY related service that can stand alone!

Speech Language Services

● Speech as Special Education o This is the students Specially Designed Instruction Speech/Language therapy is a service provided by a licensed Speech/Language therapist. In an educational setting,speech therapy services are provided to enable a student with a speech disorder to access education in the least restrictive environment.

● Speech as a Related Service o In this case, the Speech goals and objectives support the goals and objectives of the o Specially Designed Instruction.

The Goals and Objectives MUST require Skilled Intervention that only a SLP can provide.

OT/PT Services

● In a school setting, occupational therapy is provided to enable an identified student with disabilities to engage in meaningful and/or necessary occupations that allow participation in the student's educational program. IDEA 2004 and state special education laws mandate the provision of occupational therapy services if needed for student to access and benefit from educational programs in the least restrictive environment. Occupational therapy is a student centered service provided by licensed occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants.

● Physical therapy is a service provided by a licensed physical therapist and is concerned with prevention of physical disabilities and with providing rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities. These services are designed to develop or restore neuromuscular and/or sensorimotor functions, control postural deviations to minimize disabilities, and to develop and maintain maximal performance levels within the individual's physical capabilities. In an educational setting, physical therapy services are provided to enable an identified student to benefit from special education in the least restrictive environment.
