What is Vocational Training
• Supervised training which dentists must
undergo to work in GDS of NHS
• VT is compulsory for dentists
• VT is not compulsory for Hygienist

• VT lasts 1 year [365 days]

What is Dental Foundation
• Dental Foundation is a two-year training
programme for dentists
• Usually 1 year of VT in general dental practice
and
• A further year divided, in varying degrees,
between the Hospital Dental Service (HDS) and
Salaried Dental Service (SDS).
• There are several different models for Dental
Foundation currently in operation.

• May have 2 or more trainees
• Will provide individual support and advice
• Is present at least 3 days per week

No additional private income
Reimbursement for travel to study days
27/35 hour working week
Domiciliary visits & possibly recalled attendances
4 weeks holiday & public holidays
4 weeks sick leave
Maternity / paternity / adoptive leave after a
