Relocating to Australia Immigration Status for New Zealanders: Reciprocal travel arrangements exist between New Zealand and Australia. Most New Zealand citizens/passport holders do not need to apply for a visa to enter, or work in, Australia. New Zealanders only need to present their passport at Immigration on arrival at the airport to be able to enter the country. As long as your don’t have a criminal history, you will not have a problem entering Australia and will be able to start working and living straight away. If you have a criminal history, wish to obtain permanent residency or citizenship in Australia, or if you aren’t a New Zealand citizen, contact the Department of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs. Tax File Number: The Australian Taxation Department will tax you whilst working in Australia. To ensure you are paying tax, firstly you need to get a Tax File Number (TFN). We advise you apply for your tax file number as soon as you can. It usually takes about 10-12 working days to arrive. To obtain a Tax File Number you will need to complete the relevant form and then lodge it with the Australian tax office. You can apply online at or call 13 28 61 from anywhere in Australia – they will be able to assist you with any enquiries and tell you where you can apply for your tax file number. You need to have your tax file number within 28 days of commencing work in order to be taxed at the correct rate. You will need to be able to provide an address in Australia to be able to complete an application. Make sure you take adequate identification, such as a passport, copy of your letter of offer of employment and your visa. This will ensure the process can commence the day you apply. There is no fee involved in obtaining a tax file number. Your TFN will be sent to you in the mail. You then need to provide this to your employer and they will calculate your tax rate, depending on your salary. In Australia, the higher your salary, the higher the tax rate. Taxation rates for the financial year 2006-07 can be found at the Australian Taxation Office. Superannuation: It is compulsory for all Australian employers to pay superannuation. At Melbourne Health you get the choice of two super funds – HESTA (call 1800 813 327) or Health Super (call 1800 331 719). Relocating to Australia Salary Packaging: A Salary Packaging Scheme with SmartSalary is available for staff of Melbourne Health. Salary packaging is an Australian Taxation Office approved means of restructuring your income. Normally your employer would pay you in the form of cash salary after tax deductions, you would then pay expenses and purchases such as motor vehicle lease repayments and running costs, lap top computer etc., from after-tax salary. Instead with salary packaging, you restructure your salary by choosing to take a percentage of your salary in cash and package approved benefits to be paid out of your pre-tax salary. You receive part of your salary, also known as remuneration in the form of taxable benefits, and part in after-tax cash salary. To obtain full details and costs, or to access further information and calculators visit SmartSalary and use MH as the Employer code. You can access to up to $9,095 per year without incurring any FBT liability. Items packaged under this limit include: • Mortgage Payments • General Living expenses (e.g., Utility bills) • Personal Loan Payments • Rent • Life Insurance • Motor Vehicle expenses (non-Novated) • Leases) • School Fees • Credit Card Payments • External Childcare • Health Insurance • External Car Parking • External Gym Membership • Aged Care Expenses • Disability Care Other items which can be packaged (total packaging must not exceed 50% of your salary ) include: • Meal entertainment expenses • Laptop computers purchase or rental • Novated leases • Self education expenses • Personal superannuation contributions • Airline Lounge Membership • Briefcase & electronic diary and calculator • Income protection insurance • Professional Membership fees • Financial Advice on salary packaging Relocating to Australia Police Check: As part of Melbourne Health’s Code of Conduct implementation we wish to advise you that all new employees are required to undergo a police records check. The Code of Conduct is a public statement of how we conduct our business and how we treat the public, our client and colleagues. It supports the objectives of the Public Administration Act 2004 by providing guidance on the general standards of work performance and ethical conduct expected of all Victorian public sector employees. We strongly support the maintenance of appropriate standards of integrity and conduct of employees at Melbourne Health and look forward to your support in ensuring a safe workplace. Please note: This is NOT a requirement of your visa application however it is a condition of employment at Melbourne Health. I will need to see an original copy of your police check prior to your commencement at Melbourne Health. For a guide on how to apply for a national police check in your country of residence please refer to the following web link: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/47p.pdf Bank Account: You need to have an Australian bank account so your pay can be directly paid into your account. Australia has a variety of banks and building societies where you can obtain an account. The fees and charges are similar for each bank, but feel free to make enquiries and investigate their websites. To open a bank account, you need to visit your local branch and provide adequate identification. Identification is determined by a points system, with each form of evidence equating to a number of “points”. You will be asked to provide 3 or 4 forms of identification such as your passport, birth certificate, driver’s license, nurses’ registration or evidence of other bank accounts. Some banks will ask for a reference from your bank in your country of origin; however you do not need to provide this for all banks. You also need to have an address so your information can be forwarded to you. The main banks in Australia and the contact details are as follows: • ANZ – call 13 12 14 from within Australia • National Australia Bank – call 13 22 65 from within Australia • Commonwealth Bank – call 13 22 21 from within Australia • Westpac – call 13 25 75 from within Australia There are a number of other smaller banks and Credit Unions as well. Once you have applied for a bank account, the bank will forward you a keycard. You will be provided with a PIN (Personal Identification Number), which you should keep confidential, as this is the only way you can use your keycard. You should open your bank account within 2-4 weeks of arriving in Australia. If you apply after 6 weeks, it is more complicated to open an account and the rules regarding identification are much stricter. Advise your bank of your Tax File Number (TFN) to avoid higher rates of taxation on interest earned. Relocating to Australia Medicare: New Zealanders are eligible for free emergency hospital treatment in Australia, but those without a Medicare card have to pay the full cost of any non-hospital treatment such as the cost of pharmaceuticals or doctors visits. Generally New Zealanders who live in Australia can obtain a Medicare card to cover or subsidise non-hospital costs. New Zealanders visiting or moving permanently to Australia should get travel insurance to cover these costs until they can get a Medicare card. You can contact Medicare on 132 011. Private Health Insurance: We recommend the following companies: • MBF • NIB • HBA • Australian Unity • Medibank Private Transport: Melbourne has a large international and domestic airport. It is located approximately 20kms or half an hours drive from Melbourne CBD. It can be easily accessed by car, taxi or bus. Public Transport – Victoria’s public transport system consists of trains, trams and buses. There is a range of fares and types of tickets. All forms of transport on the metropolitan system accept prepaid tickets, but only certain forms of transport allow you to buy your ticket on board (ie. buses and trams – coin only). Train passengers must buy a ticket before boarding the train. It is useful to remember that some tickets, (such as 'all-day' or '2-hour' tickets) allow the passenger to change to other modes of transport using the same ticket. There are also concessions available for students and health care card holders. For information about public transport in Victoria including ticketing, timetables and concessions, contact Metlink 13 1638. Ambulance attendance and transport can be expensive so you may wish to become an ambulance member or join a private health insurance fund which covers the cost. For ambulance membership call 1800 648 484. Accommodation: Below are some useful real estate websites where you can search the suburbs and obtain a list all real estate agents in the area you will be working. This will give you an idea of rental prices and some real estate agents that you can contact before you leave or on arrival. When you arrive in Australia it is best to visit a couple of different real estate agents and ask for their rental lists. From there you can choose potential places you would like to visit and inspect. You will then need to complete an application form with the real estate agent for the properties you are interested in. If you require a reference on your application we are happy to be contacted. When renting in Australia you generally need to provide the agent with the first months rent in advance and a bond which is generally equivalent to 1 month rent. The bond will be returned to you at the end of your rental agreement providing the property is left in good condition. There is some furnished rental accommodation available but most are unfurnished. We recommend purchasing a map or Melway street directory when you arrive. You may also want to think about hiring a car for the first few days so you can drive around the area and see more properties. This is particularly recommended for families. Both www.realestate.com.au and www.domain.com.au provide large listings of properties available for rent or for sale, and also include share accommodation. Also, some well known real estate agents are: • Hocking Stuart Real Estate • L J Hooker Real Estate • Elders Real Estate • Ray White Real Estate • Biggin & Scott • Kay & Burton • Wilson & Pride Mobile Phone: Major providers of mobile services include: • Telstra – call 125 111 from within Australia • Vodafone – call 1300 650 410 from within Australia • 3 – call 131 683 from within Australia • Virgin – call 1300 555 100 from within Australia or +61 2 8860 9848 from overseas • Optus – call 1300 133 731 from within Australia Relocating to Australia Schooling: It is compulsory for all children aged between 5 and 15 to attend school.
