A Process for Creating
Technology-Infused
Classroom Activities
COS - page 17, 22
Terminology
Unit Organizer - open-ended question to
frame topic “How does the Earth’s
movement affect us?”
Essential Questions - avenues of
investigation. “Why do we have seasons?”
NETS - National Technology Education
Standards
Multiple Intelligences -Howard Gardner
suggests people possess at least 8 types
of intelligences to varying degrees
Learning styles - the process of how
students best learn
Objectives
Learn process of mapping technology
your existing activities.
Learn to use technology to add value to
your teaching and learning.
Use a validated approach to lesson
planning.
Before you begin….
What technology is available?
What are your technology skills?
And...
Technology + Skills +Learning
Examine students’ learning styles and
intelligences.
Technology addresses many types of
learners.

mouse, keyboard, touch screen
Collaborative - group work to create
project
Competitive - on-line contests like
Thinkquest Internet Challenge
Variety in Technology Use
Developing your students’ different
learning styles.
Technology is a tremendous help in
varying lesson tasks.
COS - page 20
How can you use technology to:
Solve and explain
Persuade
Write and perform
Investigate and
summarize
Develop and
Implement
Compile and analyze
Predict what would
happen
Defend a Position
Formulate a Theory
Design and Present
Brainstorm: Write these ideas in your “Good Curriculum
Planning” handout.

Infusing Technology into
an Existing Lesson Plan
A Step-by-Step
Approach
COS - page 37
Examine the Activity
First decide whether technology should be
added or not.
Ask yourself: What value will technology
add to my lesson?
Think about how technology can support
and improve student learning.
COS - page 38
Rewrite the Activity
Revise your goals to reflect changes due
to technology infusion.
Consider the following:
What skills will your students need to know?
How will students be grouped?
COS - page 39
Prepare Your Materials
Prepare the materials you need, such as:
instructional materials, handouts, and
assessments.
It is important to provide students with
clear, concise, step-by-step directions for
every aspect of the activity.
COS - page 39
Create a Schedule
Create a schedule that allows students
maximum use of technology resources.
When will the computers be available?
What off-computer activities will students be
doing when computers are in use?
What must students complete before they
work on the computers?
Introduce Lesson and
Evaluation
COS- page 40
The introduction to the lesson is your
chance to excite students about the
activity.
Explain the process step-by-step.
Distribute and review student materials.
COS- page 40
Share Student Work
Provide time for students to share their
work with each other.
This will bring closure to the activity.
It will give students a chance to see what
their classmates accomplished.
COS- page 40
Evaluate the Activity
When the activity is complete, evaluate
the students’ final project based on the
criteria that was established at the
beginning of the activity.
You should also evaluate the activity as a
whole.
Did the technology add value?
Would I implement the activity again?
Ancient Chinese Inventions
An Example of a
Technology Infused Lesson
Plan
Follow along with your handouts.
What is the Purpose of this
Activity?
State the overall purpose of the activity.
What is the purpose of this activity?
As a culminating activity on Ancient China
students will research Chinese inventions from
ancient times and will explain how these
inventions have impacted society both then and
now. Students will practice their oral
communication skills. Students will also write for
different audiences and purposes.
Unit Organizer
The unit organizer is generally an openended question that frames the topic of
investigation or study for the students.
Unit Organizer:
How do people and inventions change society?
Essential Questions
Essential questions are those that narrow
the unit organizer into more sequential,
manageable, or teachable pieces.
Essential Question(s):
How did new inventions influence the people of China during
ancient times?
Which Chinese invention has been most important to the
development of civilization throughout the world?
Curriculum Standards
What core curriculum content standards are
supported by this activity?
Try to order these standards by main
support, auxiliary support, and other.
The Main Curriculum Objective should be
the primary curriculum focus while Auxiliary
and Other curriculum objectives are either
secondary or supporting.
Main Curriculum Objective
Social Studies
History
Gr. 5-8
Learning Standard 6:
Students will describe and explain major
advances, discoveries, and inventions
over time in natural science,
mathematics, and technology; explain
some of their effects and influences in
the past and present on human life,
thought, and health.
Auxiliary Objective
English Language Arts
Language
Gr. 5-8
Learning Standard 3: Oral Presentation
Students will make oral presentations
that demonstrate appropriate
consideration of audience, purpose,
and the information to be conveyed.
Other Objectives
English Language Arts
Composition
Gr. 5-8
Learning Standard 20: Consideration of
Audience and Purpose
Students will write for different audiences
and purposes.
Technology Standards
Standards like the NETS are valuable
guides to teachers as they plan curriculum
activities that integrate technology.
By mapping these standards onto your
activities, you are ensuring that every
student will receive adequate and equal
instruction in educational technology.
Main Technology Standard
Massachusetts Instructional Technology
Standard
Grade Level: 5-8
Performance Indicator:
1.32 Create a slide presentation using
appropriate applications.
Standard:
Standard 1- Demonstrate proficiency in the
use of computers and applications as a well as
an understanding of concepts underlying
hardware, software, and connectivity.
Corresponding NETS Foundation
Standards:
Standard 3- technology productivity
tools
Auxiliary Standard
Auxiliary Massachusetts Instructional
Technology Standard:
Grade Level: 5-8
Performance Indicator:
3.9 Communicate results of research and learning
with others using the most appropriate tools (e.g.
desktop-published or word published report,
multimedia presentation)
Standard:
Standard 3- Demonstrate ability to use technology
for research, problem-solving, and
communication. Students locate, evaluate, collect,
and process information from a variety of
electronic sources. Students use
telecommunications and other media to interact or
collaborate with peers, experts, and other
audiences.
Corresponding NETS Foundation Standards:
Standard 3 -technology productivity
tools
Standard 5- technology research tools
Estimated Time to Complete

day-by-day, step-by-step, basis what you
and your students will do to meet the
identified learning objectives.
Include student directions, expectations,
and teacher instructions.
Activity Description
•Each student will be assigned an invention to research.
•Teacher will provide a list of web sites for students to use when
researching on the Internet.
• Students may also use books and encyclopedias to research.
•Students will create a 6-slide PowerPoint presentation that will
include a brief history of the invention, information on how the
invention works, a comparison of the old invention with present
samples or applications, and an explanation of how this invention has
changed the world. (see HANDOUTS A, B, and C)
Activity Description cont.
•Students will then present their findings to the entire firm in an oral
presentation using PowerPoint.
•For second part of this project students will create a top-notch print
advertisement of their assigned invention using Word. (see HANDOUTS D
and E)
•Students will discuss as a group which of the inventions have been most
important to the development of civilization throughout the world and in
doing so will rank the top five.
•Finally students will write a persuasive essay in which they defend their
choice for the invention they believe has been most important to the
development of civilization throughout the world. (see HANDOUT H)
