Could computing be in your future? Did you know... • Less than 30% of students enrolled in computing degree programs are women, yet more women are now pursuing college degrees than men. • Girls take math and science courses at the same rates as boys, and perform as well or better. What are the first words you think of when you hear the words computer science? Do they include... robotics - programming - hardware algorithms - difficult - lonely - math science - boys - boring - nerd complex - software - typing ? What if you knew . . . CS/IT folks are changing the world all of the time. They dream up creative, practical solutions and work with other smart, inspiring people to invent, design, and create things that matter. Creativity – Music apps – Movie animation – Fashion design software – 3-D virtual tours – Books with animated illustrations Instead of using wires to create electrical circuits, I craft them from paint and thread. Working with unique materials helps me connect my passions for technology and design. — Emily Lovell, MIT Media Lab What if you knew . . . CS/IT folks are changing the world all of the time. Teamwork – Media that bring people together – Collaboration I develop features for a mobile app that helps people meet up with friends to explore their city. — Siobhan Quinn, Foursquare What if you knew . . . Changing the world – Wireless sensors to track endangered species – Wearable computers that translate sign language – Smart-phone fetal monitors for rural areas – Simulations that predict the strength, speed, and path of a tornado. I developed a “virtual nurse” that helps patients understand their medications and upcoming procedures. — Laura Pfeifer, Northeastern University Is computing a good career choice? • The typical starting salary for a graduate with a BS in computing is over $60K. • There are more jobs in computing than there are students graduating with computing degrees-even in the current economy. There is no one “type” of person who goes into computing. Are you someone who: • • • • • • • is creative likes collaborating with others is curious and persistent wants to make a difference likes solving problems is a B student or above is thinking about going to college? . . . then you’re on track to go into computing! Recommended high school coursework • Math (4 years) • Science (4 yrs) • Language Arts (4 yrs) • Foreign Languages (3 yrs) “It’s important to take a rich variety of classes and learn everything you can because you never know. Life changes. Getting a full education will benefit you later on in ways you can’t imagine now.” - Tara Teich, Computer Engineer Learn more about computing • Explore dotdiva.org • Take computing courses in school • Join or start a club • Attend a summer or afterschool program • Talk with computing/IT folks • Consider an internship or summer job Thank you!
