Are You Ready to Be
Information
Literate?
Your guide: Fran Zedney,
Librarian
Information Literacy



Is the set of skills needed to find,
retrieve, analyze, and use
information
In other words, it’s knowing what info
you need, where to find it, being able
to judge (evaluate) its accuracy, and
using the information ethically (no
plagiarizing, illegally copying, etc!)
Is life long—we never stop needing
info
But everything I need is on
Google! ---- NOT!!


Many library resources,
including full text books and full
text online articles, ARE NOT on
Google
And library staff are always
happy to help you


in person, by phone, email, chat
Can Google top that?
This is gonna be exciting!

Let’s play Way or No Way

You can access over 40,000
journals with full text articles,
(some into the 1800s!)
online from Stewart Library
24/7
Way or No Way

You can read over 8000 full
text books online from
Stewart Library’s catalog
Way or No Way

Everything I need to do
scholarly research for a
class assignment is on
Google

Research at Stewart Library is
so easy a child (or a monkey!)
can do it—so can you!

Reference Assistance
What in the heck is a
database finder?


Stewart Library subscribes to
over 200 article databases—
collections which index articles
from newspapers, journals,
magazines—some have full text
The Database Finder is your
way into those databases
Academic Search Premier






Just one of many databases but a
good starting place
Indexes about 9000 journals,
magazines & newspapers with full
text for about 4500
Limit to scholarly/peer reviewed
Format citations
Print, save, email, save searches
Lots more!
But I’m looking for a
specific journal


Use Ejournals to see if a specific
journal is available online or in
print (it’s like searching over 200
databases instantly!)
I told you this would be easy!
Who died and made
Google the boss?



Google is more than google.com
Use Google’s Advanced Search,
Help screens, etc.
Take a look at Google Books,
Google Scholar—see more info
on your handout
So how’d I do?

Before you leave, give this
presentation a virtual rose or
virtual rotten tomatoes!
