Relative Pronouns in
relative clauses
who /which /where/ when /whose
The relative pronouns (which, who, whom or that) refer to the noun
(or noun phrase) before it. It is used to combine two sentences and
omit repetition.
The boy is my brother.
He is wearing a cap.
Which boy are you
talking about?
Oh I see! The boy who is
wearing a cap is your brother.
Who
●The boy who is wearing a cap is my brother.
What does it refer to?
I usually speak to the woman.
She owns the hotel.
I usually speak to the woman who owns the hotel.
Use: to replace people

WHICH
I have got a lovely dog.
It has got white fur.
I have got a lovely dog which has got white fur.
Use: to replace things/animals

Use: That can replace who or which in defining relative clauses and
in an informal style.

●Use: refers to place (house – room – park –
street – town – city – hospital – school…)
We stayed in a hotel. The hotel was very small.
The hotel where we stayed was very small.
WHERE
I know a park. I can play there.
I know a park where I can play.

Use: possessions
That’s the boy. His father is a police officer.
That’s the boy whose father is a police officer.

WHEN

month – year…)
