T4L - 2010
• 2010 is the second year of the new T4L rollout
• The 2010 program has been separated into
two Phases; Phase 1 is for Hunter/Central
Coast, Northern Sydney and Western NSW
regions only with Phase 2 for schools in other
regions.
– Phase 1 has commenced

T4L - 2010
• P5/P6 schools received their entire rollout in 2009
and should (under the current plans) receive no more
until 2013
• Sans Souci and Matraville Soldiers Settlement PS
were part of a platform change program and received
their full allocation up front.
• All other Sydney Region schools to receive their next
¼ allocation in Semester 2 this year
• Schools should consider their T4L order for 2010.

Backing Up your School Server
• Backup is an important part of any server setup. It
provides the necessary resources to recover lost files
which may result from user error up to complete server
crashes. Backup and restore systems are a part of any
recovery plan.
• In Planning for backup requirements you should consider
providing at least three times the possible data capacity
of your server to allow for backup file history.
• Schools should not rely on a single Backup Solution to
backup critical files but use a range of solutions within
their setup.
• Part of the Backup Strategy should include an Off-Site
component where some part of the backup is stored
away from the school for essential files.

Backing Up your School Server
• Note:
• There is no automatic Offsite Regional
Backup.
• Backup is a school issue.

Option 1: External USB HDD (x 3)
•Each week the active drive is manually removed and the next drive
connected.
•Minimum of three drives is required.

Large Primary/High School
• Seagate Freeagent 1.5TB 3.5”
External Drive
– (with external Power supply)
– $178 each
Option 2: Network Attached Storage
• Network Attached Storage (NAS) consists of one or more
hard disk drives in a chassis that attaches to the network.
Units containing multiple drives can be set up as RAID 1 (2
drives, mirrored) or RAID 5 (Minimum 3 drives) thus providing
additional data protection in the event of drive failure.
• NAS units would be best placed in a secure location in a
different building from where the servers are located.
• Note:
– NAS does not provide offsite capabilities.
– Security on files stored on the NAS devices is provided by your
Active Directory (Windows Server)
– NAS devices can also be used to store multimedia files such as
photos etc.

•
• - Should be replaced each
year.
• - Must be Manually swapped
each week.
• - No Security on files
• - Backup device is placed in
Same room as server.
• - Limited in Size

•
•
•
•
•
+ No swapping of drives required
+ RAID 5 offers some additional
redundancy
+ Provides for storage of multimedia
files
+ Active Directory Security applies.
+ NAS can be placed in secure
location away from server
+ Larger Capacities available
+ Can also be used to provide
storage for other files eg Photos
- Does not provide Offsite backup
Uninterruptable Power Supplies
• UPS protect servers from power outages
• Power outages can lead to server
hardware and software issues
• APC UPS’s come with Powerchute
software to shut servers down.
• APC UPS are available through DELL.

Improving DET Password Security
• Many teachers in NSW have had their Portal
ID taken over by students
– So they can watch YouTube and access other
sites normally blocked for students
• This occurred because many teachers have
an easily guessable “Secret Question”
• In an email from State Office Data 4/12/09, it
was announced that THREE secret questions
would be implemented
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Improving DET Password Security
• The setting of the three secret questions must
be instigated by the USER. They will not be
set until YOU choose to set them
– Go to My Profile in your Portal to set them
• The first two questions are choices from a list
of preset questions. The third can be a userdefinable question
• Only 15% of teachers have set their three Qs
all others still only have the one question set
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Improving DET Password Security
• Remember, if anyone gets into your DET
Account, they can email as you, get your bank,
home address and phone details and even
apply for leave on your behalf
• As a teacher, the student can access SBSR
and adjust their and other students’ reports
• The DET Portal now hosts many corporate
applications – eg. ERN, EMU, SMU, BlogEd –
All are compromised by lax password security
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Improving DET Password Security
• It is always better to never have to resort to “Secret
Questions” to unlock your account(s)
• Make your passwords for each account and
webservice: Complex, Unique AND Memorable
• Here are strategies you might want to consider:
– http://tinyurl.com/DETpasswordtips (Intranet)
• Tell your staff they must keep their DET Account
secure, do not give your details to anyone, including IT
support staff!
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Student Password Security
• Generic passwords should be avoided.
– For example, the password “k” for all Kindergarten
students.
• Generic passwords can lead to unidentifiable
Internet use, the potential for cyber bullying and
unauthorised email access.

eMail Phishing Scams
• Memorandum in inPrincipal 19 Feb 2010
– Phishing is a fact of Internet use
– People from around the world try to get you to provide
your username / password for various services such
as banks, credit unions, facebook etc.
– Email arrives asking you to verify your details via a
link to a real-looking, but bogus website
– These sites will NEVER email you asking for this
detail – do NOT fall for it.
– Forward the phishing email to [email protected]
NSW Department of Education & Training
Sydney Region
NSW Public Schools – Leading the Way
www.sydneyr.det.nsw.edu.au
Email, Spam and Phishing
• Many school staff are complaining about Spam and
Phishing emails arriving in their mailbox
– Spam & Phishing are a fact of life and we must be aware
– The vast majority of email arriving at NSW DET’s mail server is NOT
legitimate email
– We only see a trickle of Spam that the filters miss
• If you receive Spam, you can forward it to “abuse” or just
delete it.
• Teach your staff that no-one will legitimately email them
asking for personal details – this is Phishing.
• Advice for Dealing with Spam can be found at this DET
