Vision
Improve national health services and social
policies related to HIV/AIDS and other critical
health challenges.

SANNAM is committed to the promotion of
caring for the carers to care, through
expansion of the professional nursing
response to HIV/AIDS and other critical health
care challenges within the Southern African
region, and through networking, partnerships
and capacity building.

To improve the quality of health care services
through a comprehensive response to
HIV/AIDS and other critical health care
challenges in the region within the context of
the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's).



Equip Nurses and midwives in each NNAs to
protect themselves from the transmission of
disease and other related hazards within their
professional Environment
Enhance good and high standard
performance of SANNAM staff
Increase the nursing and midwifery response
to challenges posed by HIV and AIDS
pandemic and other health care challenges in
all fifteen NNAs




Improve the quality and availability of Human
Resource for Health through the improvement of
the working conditions of nurses and midwives,
and other health workers in all 15 member
countries
Lobby for SANNAM additional support from the
regional and international Organizations, private
sector and Non-Governmental Organizations
Strengthen SANNAM monitoring and evaluation
system
Develop and implement a communication
strategy



This is a five years project (1 April 2007 - 31
March 2012)
The aim of this project is to Develop Nursing
Leadership in the SADC region to influence
Health Policies Related Issues of HIV/AIDS
and Health Systems
5 years budget of US $ 410, 000 (less for a
network activity)


yearly brings together 2 members of the nursing
leadership from each NNA from all the 15
member countries with other stakeholders to
discuss issues partnering to the objectives cited
above
Long-term result: After 10 years or more,
SANNAM should stand as a well-functioning
organization, known and respected in the region,
able to build the capacity of its members to meet
the challenges posed to nurses and health
systems by the HIV pandemic



Outcomes: medium term objectives to be
realized in a period of 3-5 years
Outputs: short term results to be realized in a
period of 1-2 years through the planned
activities
Activities to be conducted periodically as per
annual work plan in order to meet the
targeted outputs.
Activity 1.1.1 Hold a train the trainer workshop
for network members:

Planned yearly activity in the Five years
workplan, but not budgeted for 2009 –
2010annual workplan because of limited
available funds for the 5 years project.

Activity 1.1.2 Hold one influencing policy
workshop per year to network members:
Symposium to be held 13 February, 2010.
under the theme: “MANAGING NATIONAL
NURSING ORGANISATIONS: STRATEGIES AND
TACTICS”. Join to the network meeting for cost
effectiveness.

Activity 1.1.3: Provide seed funding for
National Nurses Associations: Not done
because of limited fund
Activity 1.1.4 Disseminate materials to network
members on influencing policy: 

Policy, new research publications and recent
documents on global health initiatives, HRH
distributed electronically
Activity 1.1.5 Motivate members to identify
trainer of trainers of HIV/AIDS issues at
country level: 7 countries, included in the
proposal on: “training of trainers on Universal
Precautions in the SADC region”, proposal
submitted to SADC Secretariat

Activity 1.2.1 Provide forum for sharing of
experiences through a network meeting:
Purpose of this forum


Activity 1.2.2 providing individual coaching to
network members on their unique challenges
and needs using twinning partnerships:
Leadership challenges were reported in
Zimbabwe
Visit in DRC


Activity 1.2.3 Facilitate and link member
countries with other countries utilizing
evidence based research and best-practices
sharing through twinning partnership :
DENOSA Provincial Offices with member
countries;
Malawi visiting Zimbabwe
We encourage members to revitalise their
twining partnership, it is very important to
learn from, and assist each other

Activity 1.2.4 Provide opportunity for
members to share experiences and learn
from each other how issues around HIV/AIDS
are tackled in each country: Members present
at the ICN congress were encouraged to
attend the ICN HIV/AIDS Networking

Activity 1.2.5 Include gender related
questions on all correspondence related to
network activities: Gender issues are
considered and addressed in all
circumstances.



Activity 2.1.1 prepare work plans and narrative
reports as per requirement by funders:
reports have been submitted to funders,
A process of reviewing SANNAM strategic plan
for 2009 – 2012 was successful
Workplan developed and approved by CNA and
SANNAM EXCO
Activity 2.1.2 Prepare annual report for
members:
Progress report produced,
French and English versions delayed, but will be
distributed electronically.
Activity 2.1.3 Prepare financial reports and
advance requests as per requirement by funders:

Financial reports have been prepared and
submitted to funders, presentation in this
meeting
Activity 2.1.4 Manage secretariat staff including
updating contracts and job descriptions as
required and carrying out regular performance
reviews and development plans:
Staff performance tools were developed, staff
appraised
Jobs descriptions reviewed

Activity 2.1.5 Gather research and policy
information of interest to members and
distributed accordingly: done and reported
above.

Activity 2.1.6 Communicate regularly with
chairperson, Exco and members to inform
and follow up on activities: Exco members
have been regularly consulted by email and
telephone calls for reporting, opinions and
decision making.

Activity 2.1.7 Prepare and distribute an annual
news letter for members: The 2007-2008
Newsletter was produced and largely distributed
at ICN Congress in Durban

Activity 2.1.8: Prepare and email a quarterly
electronic news letter to members and partners:
August – focus on ICN and January

Activity 2.1.9 Redesign and regularly update
SANNAM website: Website review was initiated
since May 2009, but not finalized due to
irregularities of the contracted Information
Technologist.

Activity 2.1.10 Develop a comprehensive
communication strategy in 3 languages:

Activity 2.1.11 Develop a standardised
reporting format for SANNAM Country
Members: Standard reporting guidelines



Activity 2.2.1 Hold one Exco meeting:: EXCO
meetings regularly held
Activity 2.2.2 Conduct periodic Exco
teleconferences to give the necessary report: one by one based on the nature of the matter

Activities 2.2.3 present the annual work plan to
the Exco for comments and approval: 20092010 workplan was reviewed and approved by
the Exco members in April 2009


lobbying and advocating on issues of Human
Resources in the SADC region

Aim: fostering and supporting innovative
ways to improve the situation of Human
Resources for Health and the working
conditions of nurses and midwives, in the
Southern African region.
Fixed budget of € 140,000 covering activities,
50% of office expenses and 90% of salaries of
the Finance Officer and the Administrative
Secretary.

Activity 1: SANNAM Symposium on Human
Resources for Health (HRH)
Aim: to explore existing HRH strategies in the
regions and to develop strategic guidelines
for lobby and advocacy activities to be used
by SANNAM members in order to influence
improvement of HRH situation in the region
 Resolutions:
- SANNAM to advocate for a nursing desk
within the SADC secretariat





Ensure further collaboration with this unit to
politically advance nursing issues in the
region
Support utilization of SADC policies by
member countries
Strengthen health systems research for
evidence based data to drive its
recommendations to policy makers
Identifying sub-groups of researchers at the
country level.


Formalize relationship with Equinet,
universities, and other regional and
international organizations to support
capacity building to address HRH issues
engage in Research training for member
organizations and ensure dissemination
through International networks and scientific
publications e.g. CURATIONIS



Activity 2:Supported participation of Network
members in the Equinet conference on Equity in
Health in East and Southern Africa held in Kampala
– Uganda 23 – 25 September, 2009
Activity 3: Support Network members to participate
in the Second Global Health Workforce Alliance
forum on HRH to be held in Thailand 2011
Activity 4: Hold a lobby and advocacy meeting at
the Second Global Health Workforce Alliance forum
on HRH in Thailand 2011 to promote strategies to
Recruit, Train, and Retain HCWs into the
profession; and implementation of nursing career
path to improve HRH in each country in the region.


Activity 5: Select and distribute guidelines
and policy documents HRH, improved scope
of practice, and on Positive Practice
Environment for health care.
Activity 6: Hold a project evaluation meeting
at the 2011 SANNAM network meeting



SANNAM – Diaspora Workshop I held 27-28
November, 2009, Burgers Park Hotel, Pretoria
Engaging African Diasporas in strengthening
health systems in the SADC region
Purpose: to develop an action plan that would
identify and match Diaspora skills and other
resources with the priority of health systems
strengthening needs in SANNAM member
countries



Explored theories on the impacts of Health
care Workers (HCWs) migration on Health
Systems in the region, the existing strategies,
policies and guidelines to respond to the
challenges,
Identified areas of Health Systems
Strengthening (HSS) were Diaspora resources
are most needed
Identified two countries for initial
implementation = Malawi and Zimbabwe



Developed a strategic framework for project
implementation
SANNAM – Diaspora Workshop II to be held in
Ottawa, April 2010 : To confirm - subject to
funding availability will:
Develop an action plan for resources
mobilisation and project implementation

Financial Sustainability

Total dependency on donor funding

Limited Human Resources to involve in
more activities




SANNAM Network is growing and has huge
potentialities to influence regional and
international health policies
Members need to dedicate more resources for
support to each other and sustain the structure
Solidarity fund initiative is essential for mutual
assistance and should not be neglected
Reinforcing regional and twining partnership,
Research involvement, and understanding of
national, regional and international political
environment are still needed to build effective
nursing leadership in the region.
