Transcript Brighterlite initiates fee-for - Forsiden

Brighterlite initiates fee-for-service pilot
using mobile payment solutions
in Pakistan and Kenya
Enormous global demand for
distributed electricity
The world has 1,5 billion people without
power. Roughly 50% of these have a
phone, or will buy one during next year.
$37Bn is used annually for kerosene for
lighting. Lighting by solar home systems
(SHS) is much better and lower in cost,
but requires an investment.
After having secured light and phone,
“everybody” wants a TV.
2
Current megatrends in technology/market are
changing the electrification market
 LED lights (95 % less kWh/yr) are becoming widespread.
 LED TVs (80% power reduction) are becoming widespread.
 Brighterlite will shortly launch a LED TV with 90 % less power production
 Low power consuming tablets will become wide-spread
 Mobile phones have reached 90 % use in developing countries.
 Strong need for 1 kWh per year.
 Maintenance free Lithium batteries at 1 kg replace ~20 kg lead batteries.
UBS, August 2014:
“Big power stations in Europe could be redundant within 10-20 years as electric cars,
cheaper batteries and new solar technologies transform the way electricity is
generated, stored and distributed”

Major rise in competitive strength of solar power
production over oil based power
Price Development of Oil and PV modules
 These major changes imply that
many ”former” conclusions and
choices no longer apply.

 Many utilities were built
based on trade-offs from
year 2000.
Brighterlite offering based on cutting edge
technology and recent megatrends
 A family can have TV, lamps, telephones, TV, tablet and radio for 0.8 kwh/week.
This highly efficient consumption implies that rural grid distribution can be
5 times more costly per kWh now than in 2005 due to similar cost,
but 80-90 % less usage.

Brighterlite provides solar electricity to the
1,5 billion people without power today
The Problem
•
•
•
•
People pay a lot for dangerous kerosene light and go to town for mobile charging
The lighting from kerosene lamps is poor and expensive and a health hazard
People do not have finance for buying solar systems
People prefer to buy the cheapest systems, which often fail after short time
The Brighterlite Solution
• Brighterlite installs, owns and support durable Solar Systems at the customer site
• Typical monthly subscriptions from $4 to $11
• From basic systems with lamps & mobile charging to larger models with fan, radio
and Brighterlite’s ultra-efficient LED TV
• Customers can pay monthly or weekly using scratch card or mobile phone
(In case of missing payments the system shuts off.)
• Brighterlite offers scalability in system design and delivery
• All used units are collected for recycling or proper handling.

Pakistan Example: Electric grid has
insufficient reach to support mobile coverage
Insufficient power supply key issue in Pakistan
>
Power gap may increase
The Pakistan mobile market is
booming!
> Currently 77mill people w/o power

43% of the population of Pakistan
lives without access to electricity
>
The main grid has power-off typically
5-12 hours per day.
>
There is a large gap between access
to electricity and sale of mobile
phones
