be eligible for most types of state or
federal aid students must complete the Free
Application for Financial Student Aid
(FAFSA).
 The
priority deadline for submitting the
FAFSA is March each year!

Cal Grant A Community College
Transfer Entitlement Award
• Available to Community College transfer students
who were not awarded a Cal Grant A or B within a
year of graduating high school.
• Must have a minimum 2.4 GPA
• Be under age 24 at the time of transfer
• To apply submit FAFSA by March 2nd

CAL T (CAL GRANT EXTENSION
FOR TEACHING CREDENTIALS)
• If you have had a CAL grant as an
undergraduate and you are continuing your
education by entering a teacher credential
program, you may qualify for a one-year
extension.

Federal Pell Grant
 Pell
Grants are generally awarded to
undergraduate students—those who haven't
earned a bachelor's or graduate degree.
 In limited cases however, you could receive a
Pell Grant if you're enrolled in a postbaccalaureate teacher certificate program.

TEACH GRANTS









Available beginning July of 2008
$4,000 per year for undergraduate and credential work (for a
maximum of $16,000)
Must have a minimum 3.25 GPA
Must submit the FAFSA by March 2, 2008
Must be currently completing (or plan on completing) coursework
necessary to begin a career in teaching
Mist meet basic eligibility requirements
Must teach in a high-need field:
 mathematics, science, foreign language, special education,
bilingual education, reading specialist or other documented highneed fields
Must commit to teaching full-time in a high-need school for a
minimum of four years (within 8 years of receiving your credential)
If teaching service is not met, the grant must be repaid as an

ASSUMPTION PROGRAM OF
LOANS FOR EDUCATION (APLE)
 For
students pursuing a teaching career
 Will pay back up to $19,000 of qualified loans in
exchange for four consecutive years of teaching in
a low-performing k-12 California public school
 Can apply after completing a minimum of 60
semester units but before completion of a
credential.

Stafford Loans– both Federal Family
Education Loan Program (FFELP) and Direct
Loan Program
You must be employed as a full-time teacher
at a qualifying school for five complete and
consecutive years
Will pay back up to $17,500 to highly
qualified teachers of math and science
After completion of five years of service

Troops to Teachers
Assists individuals transitioning from military
service to careers in education
 May pay for all normal intern program
charges
 Possible $5,000 bonus for teaching in

Tips for Standing Out in the
Scholarship Competition
 Follow all directions (everything requested for the scholarship
application process)
 Include a color photo
 Include a table of contents in your application packet (application,
essay, letters of recommendation, transcripts, cover letter, photo,
etc.)
 Use some color in your application packet (color digital photo,
colored paper for table of contents, etc.)
 Submit originals whenever you can, only first generation Xerox
(copy)
 Bind materials into a brightly colored report folder (so that it
won’t come apart)
 Mail flat (not folded) in a large envelope
