Director: Alex Siu-Lun Fok Works closely with manufacturers to develop and test new dental products and materials in the areas of biomaterials, biomechanics and nano technology. 3M support since 1991 .
Virtual Dental Patient:
interactive 3D computer rendition of a dental patient.
Artificial Mouth:
replicates the effects of a year of chewing in one day (“chews” 300,000 per day) Exhibited in Smithsonian Inst.
Shape Optimization of Dental Restorations
An interdisciplinary project involving engineers and dental scientists. 92% of fractured teeth have been previously restored Shape optimization based on finite element analysis and biological adaptive growth process led to significant reduction in the stress levels at the tooth –restoration interface.

Periodontitis and systemic disease

EFFECTS OF PERIODONTAL THERAPY ON PRETERM BIRTH
Treatment of periodontitis in pregnant women improves periodontal disease and is safe but does not significantly alter rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, or fetal growth restriction. 1UO1 DE018902, Engebretson (PI)
DIABETES AND PERIODONTICS TRIAL
Determine if periodontal treatment improves glycemic control in type II diabetics with moderate to advanced periodontitis
Launched 2002 NIDCR contract $ 5.9 M Jim Fricton (PI) Sandra Myers (Repository) Lois Kehl (Neuroscience) John Look (Registry) • A variety of therapeutic approaches have evolved for the relief of TMJD symptoms. Implants have been used primarily to replace the articular disc of the joint and the condylar head of the mandible. Long-term success and functioning of these implants remains a major problem.
A neural pathway for itch
Steve Davidson, Xijing Zhang, Sergey G Khasabov, Donald A Simone & Glenn J Giesler Jr Department of Neuroscience, Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences.
Nature Neuroscience 12, 544 - 546 (2009)
“scratching the cutaneous receptive field of primate STT neurons produced inhibition during histamine-evoked activity but not during spontaneous activity or activity evoked by a painful stimulus, suggesting that scratching inhibits the transmission of itch in the spinal cord in a state-dependent manner.”
