 The Eritrean-Ethiopian War lasted for 30 years (19611991)
 Mengitsu Mariam was a high ranked officer which
lead the Mengitsu government into a more
militaristic state.
 Mengitsu government killed thousands of people in
attempt of genocide
 The Oromos were taken over by the Derg and
Amharas


 We think that the war is related to the story because
Mawi’s family needed to come to America due to the
affects this war had on them.


 Mawi felt bullied in school because of where he came
from and because of how he was different from other
students.

 Mawi came from a refugee camp with little to no
finances to bring to America, so he was below the
poverty line growing up.
