(yes/no) Did you play around with the class roster? Application development Personal computer Batch processing and time sharing Internet platform Look for people to help you. • Summary results • Full results Zen of Internet reading “When you finish and submit the survey, you will see a thank-you screen with further instructions. Print that out to turn in along with the answers to the following questions: …” Assignment feedback General: • Missing assignment numbers • Missing staples when multiple page assignments • Type your name or print it big letters (why not type it)? • Handwritten answers Assignment 1: • Confusion over memory vs storage and ROM vs RAM • Skipped answers to questions • Food for thought: what program were you executing while you completed the survey? Assignment 3: • Skipped answer to question Quizzes • Collectively, you know all the answers. • Use the quiz blog or other means of collaborating. • Do not be satisfied with memorizing answers – it is not worth the time and effort it takes. Week 4 A couple of people accidently did too many assignments -- how did that happen? Asking questions is hard • what program were you executing while you completed the survey? • What is the difference between memory and storage? Assignment feedback 1. Several people did not turn in their Google Docs home page with their post description – read carefully. 2. Confusion on program execution – go over example. 3. Is the movie industry long tail? Explain. 4. iPad I/O devices – any sensors? Presentation/transcript confusion – use presentations Groups: How did you organize your work? No first drafts! The answer to the following question was not in the presentation: What is the cost trend for memory, storage and CPU chips? How did you answer it? Google docs versus word • Which is best? • Which does the future favor? http://bit.ly/zveHmr Week 5 New Twitter user interface -- home New Twitter user interface -- connect New Twitter user interface -- discover New Twitter profile page http://twitter.com/larrypress Links can be shortened, but it is now automatic http://bit.ly/xW4bDS What happens when you click on the little green icon? Did you know this went to the list? Assignment feedback Client Server The survey, results and program are all at Surveygizmo in the storage of their server. I feel if I ask a question it will be dumb or embarrassing. Now let’s see.....How many sentences will get me full credit for this particular assignment?....... All joking aside, I identified with what Michael Wesch presented. Much like the opening remark above, I find that when I begin a course, I look to the syllabus and associated schedule to determine what needs to be accomplished over the semester to, get the “A”. Last week I read “A student’s evaluation of Stanford’s massive online courses,” on our class blog. That particular article made me realize that there is a different type of student out there, which is the student who demands to be challenged and who does not want everything spelled out for him. Assignment 10 amnesty offer Turn in a printout showing your form and the spreadsheet view with three or more responses. 7 did it 1 sick 3 no form 4 zip Week 6 1990 1995-6 Today A static Web page Web page with a simple program Web page with a complex program HTML5 is taking off now Recognizing questions is difficult! Java applet JavaScript Java Assignment 13 1. The presentations introduced Twitter and then showed how it could be used in a collaborative application. What was that application? Assignment 14 Think carefully about the group you plan to support, then write a short statement of who they are and what their common interest is. • One per person • What constitutes success? Blog roster https://creator.zoho.com/lpress/copy-ofcis275-roster1/#View:CIS275_with_blog Week 7 Web sites Command line www.ipchecking.com, continued How did you learn to do it? • • • • • • Asked IT tech at work Already knew how to do it A friend told me how to do it I used Google search A classmate showed me how to do it Learned in a community college course How companies use blogs http://blog.roku.com/ A blog for Roku users Building Windows 8 An inside look from the Windows engineering team MSDN blogs A collection of Microsoft technical blogs, most by Microsoft employees. Week 9 Comparing a wiki with a database for collaboration • Which is more flexible? What would one have to do to add a new field like the name of the person recommending the class? • Which is best for search, for discovering relevant information? • Which is most consistent in format? http://bit.ly/GDqHnk • What can we do that would be as useful to the world? (contest for best idea) • How did they organize their collaboration? • How did I make this slide? 200 x 200 headshot Week 10 Best class collaboration Recommendations: http://bestclassescsudh.wikispaces.com/ Format: http://bestclassescsudh.wikispaces.com/Format How well did we follow the format? What problems arose? Why we did it, part 2 Thank you for sending this email to me. You have truly made my day! Thanks, Karen Thank you, Larry, for the shared info. It's tremendously encouraging. Matt Characteristics of a good teacher? Characteristics of a good student? Collaboration project ideas: http://collaborationproposals.wikispaces.com/ Week 11 Assignment zen http://www.wilknick.blogspot.com/ Week 12 Two ways to add information when sampling Larger (more precise) samples Greater sampling rate 5 different levels 9 samples 16 different levels 37 samples Not just audio … Temperature Orientation Location Acceleration http://collaborationproposals.wikispaces.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGCJ46vyR9o Week 13 Data + ___ → Information Week 13 http://community.mis.temple.edu/ Long LAN links $40,138 $31,096 $1,729 – $17,250 $3,448 Gigabit Ethernet price per month, Q1 2012 $8,000 Ethernet “LAN” evolution IEEE 802.3, 1982, thick, rigid coax Fiber and copper wire 10 mbps 100 gbps 185 meters 100 kilometers Week 14 Collaboration Smooth -- continuous Click-click-click -- discrete Would we get a better approximation if we sampled every minute. Would we get a better approximation if we could measure to the nearest 1/100 degree. One bit per pixel Would a finer sampling grid yield a better picture with more information? Higher resolution -- more information? Explain your answer in common sense terms. Digital information More samples → more information More sample variety → more information More information → better fit to reality University disruption
