Transcript How to convince pupils to use an ELP

Why should we use an ELP?
Some arguments to convince pupils
How successful are you as
a language learner?
Language learning is very
important for people in
Europe - the European
Language Portfolio can help
you to become a successful
language learner!

What YOU can do in
languages
 Your ELP belongs to YOU: It is YOU who describes
what you can do in the languages you speak, it’s
NOT your teacher who tells you what you can’t do!
 Also languages which you have learnt or which you
are learning outside school and languages which
you can just speak but not write, or which you can
read but not speak “count”.
 You can document your language competence in
the checklists of your language biography and see
the progress you are making.

Comparing yourself with
others
 You can compare your knowledge of languages with
that of students in other countries by describing
what you can do with „can-do statements“ for five
communicative activities (Listening, Reading,
Spoken Interaction, Spoken Production, Writing) at
six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2), e.g.
Spoken production , A1
I can use simple phrases and sentences to describe
where I live and people I know.

Your „language ID“:
Language Passport
 The Language Passport is one of the 3
parts of the ELP. It is your “language
ID”. More and more people in Europe
own a “Language Passport”.
 You can document all your languages in
your Language Passport.
 Your Language Passport also contains
important information about language
learning and intercultural experiences
at home and abroad.

Your learning companion:
Language Biography
• The Language Biography (2nd part of the ELP)
is your “learning companion”: You will learn
how to learn languages effectively by
- setting yourself individual learning goals
- developing your favourite language learning
strategies to achieve your goals
- monitoring and evaluating your own work
- thinking and writing about what you have found out
about life and cultures in other countries
- describing what you have learned while staying
abroad.

Your „best of collection“:
Dossier
• The Dossier (3rd part of the ELP) is your „best of
collection“:
 You collect and present your best products in
different languages (e.g. your best texts or videos)
in your dossier. By selecting typical pieces of work
you can show exactly who you are as a language
user.
• You can put language certificates and report cards
into your dossier, e.g. Cambridge Certificates (KET,
PET, FCE) to underpin your self-assessment.

Learning for life - or just
for school?
• Using an ELP may seem „hard work“ – you will
have to learn how to do that and it will take time –
but it’s worth the effort because the ELP will help
you to become a reflective language learner, who
will be able to learn autonomously in the future.
• As you are learning how to use your ELP at school
your teacher will acknowledge your efforts by
awarding bonus points.
