Issues for digital television
Digital television finally breaks through, so…
Monitoring the service is of vital importance
Digital television offers advantages, but…
Unfortunately it has some vulnerable properties
Disturbances are very annoyingly noticeable
Preventive action is necessary, so…
Respond before problems run out of hand
Solve before the customer responds
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71

17
Important issues
Channel property issues
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
18
Channel property issues
Operators are using signals coming from several sources
Not everyone is using the same methods
Uniform = user friendly
Properties of channels and control of the set-top box
Different = irritation and quality of service degrade
Loudness differences
Aspect ratio conversion artefacts 4:3 and 16:9
Missing teletext, subtitling and EPG
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
19
Loudness differences
DVB-C distribution means
- in most cases - direct
re-multiplexing of streams
Audio properties remain the same
Result: extreme differences in loudness level among
channels
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
20
Solution
ALC100 DVB Audio Level Control
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
21
ALC100 features
Corrects the audio level directly in the data stream
No loss of audio quality
Creative programme properties remain untouched
Manual adjustable correction of average loudness
differences
Optional automatic gain control of mutual average
loudness
Single system capacity: 50 up to 100 stereo channels!

25
Important issues
Aspect ratio issues
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
26
Aspect ratio issues
Different aspect ratios 4:3, 14:9 en 16:9
Transfer is the best if source material, television set
and broadcast mode are all equal
If not, conversion is needed
Dependent on the method artefacts arise
Black bars, loss of resolution, distorted ratios,
loss of parts of the picture
Most annoying artefact = double conversion
Black bars all around the picture on a 4:3 display
Black bars on both sides of the picture on a 16:9 display
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
27
Solution
ARC100 DVB Aspect Ratio Control
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
28
ARC100 features
Automatic generation of control signals dependent on
active picture content
Creative programme properties remain untouched
Functional for analogue and digital TV
No loss of video quality

Important issues
Teletext and subtitling issues
ITNM Systems product overview v1.71
34
Teletext and subtitling issues
Some channels are using other standards
Teletext and subtitling is distorted, fails or is missing
completely
The index can be missing
No link to the specific page
The set-top box shows no index of the available languages
Example
Discovery Science, Discovery Civilisation, Discovery Travel
& Living, Animal Planet, Hallmark, National Geographic
Channel and Cartoon Network

71
Broadcast audio issues
The audio levels of supplied signals differ a lot
The levels vary (mostly over a long period of time)
Maintenance and monitoring are needed permanently
An increasing amount of audio signals is not prepared to
distribute by FM-modulation
Result: loudness differences and distortion
(lisping/cracking)
