PILOT TRAINING DEPARTMENT
Introduction to VFR
VATSIM VFR Pilot – P3
PILOT TRAINING DEPARTMENT
Introduction
Visual flight rules (VFR) is one of two set of regulations which
aircraft can operate in, typically general aviation aircraft fly VFR.
It consists of navigating visually with reference to landmarks on
the ground while also remaining visually separated from other
traffic. Generally VFR provides pilots with considerably more
freedom outside of controlled airspace.

Visual Flight Rules
There are certain restrictions that pilots must abide by in order to safely and
legally fly under VFR which is also known as VMC (Visual meteorological
conditions). These are outlined below.
Before conducting any VFR flight the pilot in command MUST ensure that the
entire flight will remain within the restrictions and must mitigate against
anything that causes the flight to breach the restrictions.

Airspace Classifications
The UK airspace is split into two Flight Information Regions
(FIRs), the London and Scottish FIR. Within these FIR’s the
airspace is split into 6 different ICAO standard classifications.
Classifications A,C,D and E are controlled airspace while classes F
and G are uncontrolled airspace.
N.B The UK does not have any class B airspace.
The full explanation of each Class can be found within official
CAA documentation linked at the end of this PowerPoint. It is
fundamentally important you read this.
