What is ESOL?
• Program for students whose home
language is not English
• Program to teach reading, writing,
listening, and speaking in English
• Teach AKS to maximum extent possible
while language is developing
• Pull out

How Are Students Qualified?
• WAPT in fall of K (Listening
and Speaking)
• ACCESS in Spring for K
and 1-5
Modifications
• Classroom changes to make learning
easier (visuals, small group, repeating
directions)
• Modification of AKS (smaller steps to
same goal)
Help at Home
• Read daily in your native language and English
if you can
• Have your child read to you
• Ask questions during and after reading
• Ask your child to point out words, pictures, etc.
• If you can not read to your child, tell stories and
have them repeat them and draw each part of
the story on a different page then let them write
the story based on the picture
• Make homework a priority every day
