 6382 total miles of electric transmission lines in
FPL system (1321 miles in Miami-Dade/Broward
counties)
 On site inspection twice per year
 Monitor primarily for potential “grow in” species
and for fire fuel
 Melaleuca, Australian Pine, Sawgrass and Cattails
are predominant species that are monitored
Prioritization
 Based on threat level
 I.e. Voltage of circuit, type of threat,
funding, etc.
Methods
 Rolling of Sawgrass
 Herbicide application
 Top and treat with herbicide
 Prescribed burn
 Mowing
Tracking
 Perform bi-annual patrols on circuits to
evaluate effectiveness of treatment(s)
 Investigate all relays to determine root cause
and possible mitigation
 Annual report of all work types performed
