“ACCULTURATIVE STRESS”
(Berry, 1990; Williams & Berry, 1991;
Rodriquez et al., 2002)
LIMITS AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVE OF STUDIES
1) The main part of measures for the evaluation of
acculturative process is valid only for adults
2) The main part of measures regard linguistic


DAP (“Test della Doppia Luna”: “The double moon
test”, by Greco, 1999, modified to underline


Short Interview Schedule –
designed specifically for this
study.
RESULTS

(by means of Taltac2 Software)
Semantic aspects:
•The semantic class “Family” is used by STR sample more
than IT sample (43%)
•The semantic class “Nation” is used by STR sample more
than IT sample (77%)
•The words related to “Cultural aspects”
are disseminated all along the text of STR
sample with a dispersion index of 1

It’s possible to extract the main
theme of a document by a
comparison
with
another
vocabulary (in this case: standard
Italian)
The peculiar language extracts
the most representative words
used in the text compared to
standard italian.
In STR and IT texts
the mainly
represented
words refer to
development
aspect, typical of
adolescence.

DISCUSSION

The (missing) correspondence between narratives
and their graphic representations

“Feeling Italians” Vs. “Being foregneirs”

Difficulty in merging one’s own family, cultural, and
social belongings with individual feelings
CONCLUSION
“ Because in my life I faced many difficulties when I was
young.
But you can learn in your life. When I lived in Mauritius my
cousins didn’t understand me, I felt lonely there. My mum
and my father lived in Italy. I have suffered in Italy, but
also in Mauritius I have suffered.”
