Active Shooter - Training
Active shooter situations are unpredictable and
evolve quickly, typically immediate deployment
of law enforcement is required to stop the
shooting and mitigate harm to victims.
On hearing that there is an active shooter or other
violent situation near or on-campus, TAKE
IMMEDIATE ACTION! Do not wait for instructions.
What is an active shooter ?
An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing
or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated
area, typically through the use of firearms.
Victims are selected at random
The event is unpredictable and evolves quickly
Law enforcement is usually required to end an active
shooter situation
Coping with an Active Shooter situation
Be aware of your environment and any possible dangers
Take note of the two nearest exits in any facility you visit
If you are in an office, stay there and secure the door
Attempt to take the active shooter down as a last resort
Active Shooter in building (on-campus) - GET OUT (RUN),
Cover-up (HIDE - Lock Down) or Take Action (FIGHT)!

GET OUT (RUN)- Evacuate yourself, faculty,
staff and students if it is safe to do so.
• Have an escape route and plan
mind
• Leave your belongings behind
• Keep your hands visible
in

COVER UP (HIDE - Lock Down) – Hide out, seek available
cover, stay hidden. If safe to do so take staff and
students to a secure area, away from exposure to glass,
windows or outside area. Go to a secure classroom or
office.
• Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view
• Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors
• Silence your cell phone and/or pager

TAKE ACTION (FIGHT) – If cornered,
take action – do what you have to
do.
• As a last resort and only when your life is in
imminent danger
• Attempt to incapacitate the shooter
• Act with physical aggression and throw items at
the active shooter
Active Shooter near campus - LOCK UP & HIDE (Lock-Down)

LOCK UP - If it is safe to do so, lock all campus doors.
HIDE - Stay hidden if possible and away from windows and exterior
doors.
If it is safe to do so,
COVER UP (HIDE - Lock Down) - Take faculty, staff and students to an
office area or classroom, away from exposure to glass, windows or the
outside area. Go to a secure classroom or office.
KEEP SAFE – Stay inside your campus building, unless instructed to
evacuate by the police. Do NOT open the door for anyone that is not the
Police . Must show you a badge.
CALL OUT - If it is safe to do so, call 911, detail the situation.
GET OUT - Follow all instructions given to you by the Police. You may be
requested to exit your area with your hands above your head and be told to
leave all bags, backpacks and briefcases in your office or classroom.
How to respond –
When Law Enforcement arrives
Remain calm and follow instructions
Put down any items in your hands (i.e., bags, jackets)
Raise hands and spread fingers
Keep hands visible at all times
Avoid quick movements toward officers such as holding on to them
for safety
Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling
Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating
Information you should provide to Law
Enforcement or the 911operator
Location of the active shooter
Number of shooters
Physical description of shooters
Number and type of weapons held by shooters
Number of potential victims at the location
