Shifts within Mathematics-CCSS
1. Focus: Focus strongly where the
standards focus.
2. Coherence: Think across grades, and link
to major topics
3. Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual
understanding, procedural skill and
fluency, and application

The Trajectory
Preparation for College and the
Workforce
“2014-15 is not really the finish line,
but only the first leg in a longer relay
race to create a next generation
teaching, learning and assessment
system that prepare all students for a
strong future and are worthy of our
children, teachers and schools.”

Math Practice Standards
 Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
 Construct viable arguments and critique
the reasoning of others.
 Model with mathematics.
Math Practice Standards
 Use appropriate tools strategically.
 Attend to precision.
 Look for and make use of structure.
 Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.
The
standards
stress not only
“How?”procedural
skill but also…
“Why?”conceptual
understanding, to
make sure students
are learning what
they need to succeed
at higher levels.
What Does this Mathematical Shift
Look Like and Sound Like?
(Math Lessons)
