THE BRIEF HISTORY OF
OUR COUNTRY
The region was part of the Roman Empire
From the 9th century part of the Great Moravian Empire.
Saint Constantine and Saint Methodius, the Slavic missionaries
introduced Christianity as early as in 863.
From the 10th century we were under Hungarian rule.
In 1526 Slovakia and Western Hungary were passed to the Habsburgs.
After World War I, in 1918 Slovakia became part of the new state of
Czechoslovakia.
During World War II. in 1938 Slovakia was made an autonomous unit by the
Munich Pact. The Czechoslovak state was reestablished in 1945.
November 1989 was the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia.
On January 1st, 1993 Czech and Slovak leaders agreed on separation of both
nations and Bratislava became the capital of the newly created Slovak
Republic.
May 1st 2004 is the day when Slovakia entered EU.
On January 2009 we entered the euro currency zone

The city has all the advantages of a medium sized multicultural town with
long, colorful history and tolerant, cosmopolitan population. People in this city
are very friendly; many of them speak English or German and Hungarian at
some level and answer questions with politeness and courtesy.

The study at CU Faculty of Medicine
High quality medical education is central to our mission.
Currently the Comenius University Medical Faculty offers two main
undergraduate study programmes:
1. General Medicine
2. Dentistry
both in 6 year traditional day-time doctoral study in Slovak or in
English languages. No external undergraduate doctoral programmes
are offered.
Each academic year starts in September and lasts till the end of
August.
The academic year is divided into two semesters
1. Winter semester (spreads over September till February)
2. Summer semester (spreads over February till August)
After passing the state examinations the graduate is conferred the
degree MUDr. - Medicinae Universae Doctor (Doctor of Medicine) and
MDDr. – Medicinae Dentale Doctor (Doctor of Dentistry) respectively.
The study at CU Faculty of Medicine
Since the academic year 2001/2002 the credit system has been
introduced that is compatible with the European Credit Transfer
System (ECTS), the diploma and the title are valid in all EU
countries since 2004.
First to third year’s courses provide theoretical and pre-clinical
lectures, labs and practical classes, the fourth to the sixth years
include diverse clinical experiences.
Slovak citizens study for free (6 years, if their study is prolonged
they have to pay tuition fee for each year of study)
The tuition-fee in undergraduate programs for one academic year
is 9.000 (nine thousand) EUR for the General Medicine and
10.000 (ten thousand) EUR for the Dentistry in English language.
Postgraduate PhD programs and Residency Training Programs are
offered.

The faculty representative is the Dean elected for a 4-year period by the Academic
Senate. The Dean’s office is responsible for administrative and economic issues of the
faculty. The Dean is advised by the Board of Vice Deans, each Vice Dean is in charge of
particular area (study, science, international relations, social care, etc…).
The Academic senate is the highest autonomous academic faculty authority.

EDUCATION AND PRACTICE FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS (4TH TO 6TH YEAR)
ERASMUS PROGRAM WITHIN THE EU
Erasmus reached the total of three million individual participants
in student mobility actions since the programme began.
ERASMUS Staff Mobility
The teaching staff mobility action enables staff to spend a teaching period
between 1 day - or at least 5 teaching hours – and 6 weeks at a higher
education institution in another participating European country.
