Welcome to the Braille Resource Room Welcome to the Braille Resource Room Layout of the Room Three computers, 3 scanners, 3 Braille printers and a laser printer. Each computer has/or will have all the same software. For the purposes of this training the computers will be referred to as: “IBM computer” “Emprint computer” “Tiger computer” Overview of the Network Every computer can print to the Index Braille printer using the network. The Emprint and Tiger computers are directly connected to specific computers. Every computer can print to the laser ink printer. Submit request using the repair contact form to print from your classroom to the ink laser printer. Text to Braille Scanning Textbridge vs. Kurzweil Kurzweil 1000 Starting the Kurzweil 1000 The basic steps for starting the Kurzweil 1000 are as follows: Make sure to shut down JAWS. Press Ctrl + Alt + K. Wait for the Kurzweil 1000 to begin to speak. This will take a few minutes. Some Basic Hot Keys for the Kurzweil 1000 The Kurzweil 1000 function keys are located exclusively on the number pad. These are the keypad function keys: 0 key 1 key 2 key 3 key 4 key 5 key 6 key 7 key 8 key 9 key + key - key * key / key . key NumLock Enter Start and stop reading. Rewind. Fast Forward. Go To Page. Volume Down. Speed Down. Multicolumn. Volume Up. Speed Up. Reading Mode Scan. Accept. Dictionary. Erase Text. Spell. Cancel. Help. Kurzweil 1000 The user can instruct Kurzweil to read a scanned document or other file by selecting "Open" in the File Menu Software will be upgraded to latest version soon Textbridge 11 Better for the sighted user Braille Production Emprint and Tiger computer stations are a testbed for text-on-braille printing. Jury is still out. Emprint and Tiger should not be used with Duxbury but with Viewplus Duxbury available at all 3 computers and all print to Index. viewplus Viewplus version 3 28 Tutorials available http://www.viewplus.com/support/tutorials/TSS%203.0/ Handouts: DOs/DON’Ts of the Tiger Formatter Using the Tiger Formatter in Microsoft Word New improved version 4 will be installed in the Summer Translating Your Document to Braille Using MS Word (Video) Word Format Icons Duxbury Braille Translator for Windows was recently upgraded and changes where added that require some relearning of past procedure. For example, leave Interpoint turned on in the software and select “single sided” on the Index printer. The first time you use the software some changes will need to be made to your default setup. Changes made in document menu are not permanent to DBT setup. Confirm setup before printing. Narrow Width, 11 inch paper Chars per line = 32 Lines per page = 24 Margins =0 Emboss in Interpoint should be checked. Confirm that Form is set to Narrow Width, 11 inches long, Braille paper. To switch between text and math Ctrl + M Shortcuts – the following are common math shortcuts: Fraction - Ctrl + F Radical - Ctrl + R Exponent – (squared) Ctrl + H Parentheses - Ctrl + 9 After using any of the above operations, you must use the right arrow key to get out of the parentheses, fraction, radical, exponent before entering the next part of the problem. Units – To insert units such as degrees Fahrenheit, feet, etc. select insert from the menu bar. Then choose unit name from the drop down menu. Next, you must select the type of unit from the list on the left and then choose the unit you want from the right hand list. Once you have chosen the unit you then click on insert and the unit will be inserted after whatever you have typed. Font size – To change the text to large print, you select tag from the menu bar. Select Appearance from the drop down menu. Click on the font and then modify. You can then select any size font you need from the list. Emboss – to emboss, you save the file to a disk. Take it to the embosser and open Duxbury. You open the file you want (language should be TEX). The file will open. Translate the file and then emboss just like it was a Word file.
