Mexican National Era
• 1760-1820
• Spanish rule in Texas ended
• Alliances with other countries changed Texas
borders and settlement
• Texas patriots called for freedom
• Spanish influence after Mexico claimed
independence
Vocabulary
• Constitution-outline of the basic laws of how a country
is governed
• Empresario-a person who makes arrangements to
bring settlers to a colony
• Filibuster-an adventurer that rebels in a foreign
country
• Immigration-the people that come to a country to
settle
• Representative government- allows citizens to elect
representatives to make decisions for a large group of
citizens
• Tejano -a person of Mexican descent that lives in Texas
Timeline
• 1820-Moses Austin gets permission from Spanish
to colonize Texas with Americans
• 1821-Mexico is independent from Spain
• 1821-Stephen F Austin settles 300 famlies from
the US
– Known as the Old 300
– Three requirements:
• Catholicism, Mexican citizen, good/moral character
• 1823-National Colonization Laws
• 1824-Mexican Constitution of 1824
• 1825-30 Empresario contracts granted
