Faculty Development Program
(ÖYP)
Since 2001, METU has been involved in
ÖYP which was supported by the then
State Planning Organization (DPT).
Aim was to train academic staff for newly
established universities in Turkey and later
the project was extended to some
neighboring countries.
17.07.2015
29
ÖYP
The main contributers were:
Professor Kemal Gürüz (Director of YÖK)
Professor İsmail Tosun (Vice Director of YÖK)
Professor Tayfur Öztürk (Director of GSNAS)
Professor Ural Akbulut (METU President)
Professor Fatoş Y. Vural (METU President Assistant)

ÖYP
METU had considered ÖYP from the start, as a
Social Responsibility Project
through which it could not only help to train
the much needed academic staff for the newlyestablished universities, but also
to create a strong research base and a
network among scholars.
17.07.2015
31
ÖYP
METU has developed an elaborate system of
selection process as well as training for
graduate students within the ÖYP.
17.07.2015
32
ÖYP
During their studies at METU, graduate
students of the ÖYP program have a budget
for attending international conferences, for
their research projects and for spending
longer period of time (6-16 months) abroad
to work on their research topics after their
qualifying examination.
17.07.2015
33
ÖYP
METU has taken this project very seriously
and spent time and effort in administering the
program, organizing different trips for the
students to their universities as well as
Orientation Graduate Seminars once a year
on different topics for the development of
students as instructors.
17.07.2015
34
ÖYP
Number of ÖYP students
: 869
Number of target universities : 70
For International target universities 35 students
are enrolled in the graduate programs.
Number of graduates of ÖYP > 300 (April 2012)
For 26 newly established target universities.

17.07.2015
37
ÖYP
METU has increased the number of PhD
graduates as well as the number of
publications.
METU has contributed to Turkey’s academic
capacity.
We are very proud of this social and scientific
impact of our graduate programs on
Turkey’s future in science.

SAN-TEZ
SAN-TEZ projects were initiated by METUGSNAS.
SAN-TEZ idea was supported by the General
Director of Research of Ministry of Industry
Mr. Ziya Karabulut and his Advisor
Ms. İvgen Özdal (a graduate of METU
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department).
17.07.2015
39
SAN-TEZ
The structure of these projects is based on
inventing a product or a method with a
graduate thesis study for an industrial
company.
At METU, 27 Projects are finalized.
Many are continuing, with many new
proposals.
17.07.2015
40
SAN-TEZ
The project is growing exponentially and
today many universities are involved in it.
We consider this innovative project as an
example of scientific and social impact of
METU on Turkey’s scientific community and
industry by generating an economic
development through the value added
products and methods.

at METU:
A book is prepared by
the contributions of all
Graduate Schools .
It outlines the findings
and trends in graduate
education at METU in
50 years.
17.07.2015
47
We hope that the book prepared will contribute to the
ongoing discussion on how to further improve graduate
studies in our university.
METU has invested substantially to improve graduate
programs and develop human capital in Turkey with the
understanding that capacity for innovation and intellectual
progress hinge on a strong system of graduate education.
We firmly believe that with this understanding, METU will
continue its efforts toward improving graduate studies in the
future.
