Jack London was a famous American
writer. He was born in San-Francisco on
January 12, 1876. His real name was John
Griffith. He lived in the house of his mother
and stepfather who brought him up.

J. London left school at the age
of 14 and became a sailor. He
went into the first voyage to the
shores of Japan.
He took an active part in political life. In
1894 he participated in the march of the
unemployed in Washington and he was
arrested.
Later, when he was
released he wrote the book
«The Sea-Wolf» (1904) .
The plot of this book is
partly based on his horrific
experience in the Pacific
Ocean.

In 1897 he traveled
to Alaska. After that
he wrote a series of
stories about the Far
North.

Jack London went to England as a
correspondent in 1902.

London became more seriously
engaged in literature at the age
of 23 after returning from
Alaska. First northern stories
were published in 1899, and in
1900 he had published his first
book - a collection of short

Today his books are read all over
the world. They are translated in
all the world languages. In Russia
Jack London is one of the famous
writers. His books are read both
by grown-ups and by the youth.
In his last years London experienced a creative crisis, and began
to take alcohol. Because of the crisis the writer had to buy a plot
for his new novel. This plot was sold to London by the beginning
American writer Sinclair Lewis.

build a large and
comfortable
house. The
house was built,
but, London did
not have time to
move to it. The
house was burnt
down by fire
His second wife was his
secretary - Charmian London.
During his last 11 years Jack London
lived in his ranch. He liked it very
much and put a lot of work in it.

London died in the town of Glen Ellen (California) in
1916. But people remember him even today. They call
streets, squares and museums in honor of his name.
