Digital Camera Basics

Getting started…

 Learn how to use your camera.

 Find and read the manual.  Turn off the flash and use natural lighting or staged whenever possible.

Tips for Success

 Do not take “mug shots” (straight on views) of people or products.

 Have a Focal Point or Center of Interest.

 The background should be simple. .

 Use props.

 Set up lighting for dramatic shadows.

Composition:

• Look at your subject in the eye. Take the photo at the subject’s eye level. • Move in close, 2-4 feet from your subject or closer. Do not zoom.

• Good composition, Follow the “Rule of Thirds”. Place the product on a point where the lines meet. Avoid the bulls eye effect

Change it up:

Take different angles.

Have fun.

Get down on the ground and look at your subject from a different perspective.

Be creative

Lighting

• Avoid using the flash to prevent red eye . Indirect light makes soft and beautiful pictures. It also makes one side of your subject's face light and the other shadowed, which creates strong emotion and mood.

Sunshine Basics

•Make sure the sun is behind you! • Take the photo at a time of day when the the light will not be so bright your subject squints.

• Best times are sunrise, sunset and cloudy days.

STEADY as a Rock!

• Keep your elbows close to your body to control shaking.

Press the button down half-way, then press the button down fully and keep your finger pressed on the button until the camera has taken the picture. • tripod, backpack, hold your breathe
