Yorkshire & the Humber: Population / Businesses
• The 2011 Census states 5.3 million people live in the area; 10% of the
population of England.
• In 2011, there were 146,600 regional businesses which in 2012 increased by
2% to 150,050.
• Approximately 8% of the businesses in England are situated in the region.

• The regional GVA increased by 2% between 2010 and 2011.
• The regional GVA in 2011 was £91,044 million; again 8% of the national
figure.
“Gross Value Added” is an economic measure of the value of goods and services produced in an area.

Yorkshire & the Humber: Exports
• Total regional exports increased by 15% between 2010 and 2011. National
exports increased by 13%.
• Regional exports to the European Union increased by 20%.
• Exports to North America increased by 13%; compared to a national
increase of 5%.
