Compassion
Week #5
Endurance &
Matthew 9:35-38
Jesus went through all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good
news of the kingdom and healing every disease and
sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had
compassion on them, because they were harassed
and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then
he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but
the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest,
therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
.
Colossians 3:9-14
...since you have taken off your old self with its
practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is
being renewed in knowledge in the image of its
Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised
or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or
free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly
loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each
other and forgive one another if any of you has a
grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on
love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
1. God is offering us a job
Matthew 9:36-38 When he saw the crowds, he
had compassion on them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a
shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The
harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask
the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out
workers into his harvest field.”
2. It's a job that can be very hard but the pay
and rewards are amazing
Luke 6:35-38 But love your enemies, do good to
them, and lend to them without expecting to get
anything back. Then your reward will be great, and
you will be children of the Most High, because he is
kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be
merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 “Do not
judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn,
and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you
will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A
good measure, pressed down, shaken together and
running over, will be poured into your lap. For with
the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
3. The job requires putting off your old self
and putting on the new self
Colossians 3:9-17 ...since you have taken off your old
self with its practices 10 and have put on the new
self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the
image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or
Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian,
Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly
loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each
other and forgive one another if any of you has a
grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on
love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
4. It’s a job that we can’t do alone
Show God's mercy and compassion to
everyone starting with each other
14 And
over all these virtues put on love, which
binds them all together in perfect unity.
Our church should be people unified by God’s
mercy bringing that mercy to those outside our
church.
Challenge
Ask God to show you who you have judgment
toward both inside and outside the church
Clothe yourselves and act with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience
toward those people
