Canadian Immigration
Process
Immigration Programs
• If you want to immigrate to Canada, there
are a few different ways to apply. You will
need to decide which immigration program
will work best for you and your family.
• 3 main categories include:
- Skilled Workers and Professionals
- Sponsoring your Family
- Refugee
**for other options, visit: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/eligibility.asp
Independent Skilled Workers and
Professionals
• Who Qualifies?
– Skilled workers with education, work experience, knowledge of
English or French, and other abilities that might help them
establish in Canada
– You must take a test to determine eligibility (must score 67+)
• Why?
– Canada needs skilled workers to fuel our economy, where our
population falls short to fill these positions, the government looks
to immigrants to keep the economy going
• Requirements?
– You must have at least one continuous year of full-time, paid
work experience or the equivalent in part-time continuous
employment
– You must have had this experience within the last 10 years.
Sponsoring Your Family
• Who Qualifies?
– If you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada,
you can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, dependent
child (including adopted child) or other eligible relative (such as a
parent or grandparent) to become a permanent resident.
• Why?
– If you do not qualify as a skilled worker or other, but have family
living in Canada, it is another way to apply
• Requirements?
– If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent
resident, you are responsible for supporting your relative
financially when he or she arrives (making sure they will not seek
government financial assistance)
Refugees
• Who qualifies?
– Refugees are people who are outside their home country or the
country where they normally live, and who are unwilling to return
because of a well-founded fear of persecution based on:
• race, religion, political opinion, nationality or membership in a
particular social group, such as women or people of a
particular sexual orientation
• Why?
– Canada offers refugee protection to people in Canada who fear
persecution or whose removal from Canada would subject them
to a danger of torture, a risk to their life or a risk of cruel and
unusual treatment or punishment
• Requirements?
– Officers receiving your refugee claim will decide whether it is
eligible for referral to the Immigration and Refugee Board of
Canada (IRB), an independent administrative tribunal that makes
decisions on immigration and refugee matters
