Why do people describe the family
in different ways?
Because there are many patterns of family living. The
word family is used in connection with a person’s
ancestry. Families have different attributes and vary in
size
What is meant by the term roles?
Roles are socially accepted behavior patterns
determined by a person’s status in society.
Describe four family types
Nuclear family: members of 2 generations (parents
and children)
Extended family: includes relatives other then parents
and children, such as grandparents or cousins
Single parent family: headed by one parent
Stepfamily: includes one spouse who has children from
a previous relationship
How does a blended family differ
from a stepfamily?
A blended family is formed when both spouses have
children from pervious relationships
